Should the school let parents have a say in this matter? School posted this on facebook only.

Beginning April 6 through April 29, Batesville School District will make up a total of 3 days that were missed due to inclement weather by adding an hour to each school day. The school day on these dates will be 7:30-3:30. Doors will be open at 7:10 a.m. Regular school hours will resume on Thursday, April 30. The last day of school will now be May 29.

Fayetteville polled teachers on it via electronic poll. However, before they ever even reported the poll results, they cancelled the possibility of making up time this way. It presents significantly more prolonged of a disruption to people's schedules than just consolidating it into a few days. It really screwed with extracurricular activities and such as well.

Why don't they just cancel spring break?

There is 5 days right there.

Disruptions to preplanned travel. Would end up being wasted school days, at least up here, because we would have at least 30% of our student and teacher population out of school. There was a poll checking on this a couple of years back where they wanted to see how many teachers and students/families had travel plans that could not be cancelled if we held school.

Unfortunately, you dip into the same things on Saturday schools, which we had to resort to a few years back as well. It becomes a self fulfilling prophesy: teachers know that a small % of students will show, so they don't plan anything worthwhile. STudents/parents know that teachers aren't planning anything meaningful, so they hold their kids out of school, just increasing the problem.

The legislature passed a law (guess you would have to call it a law) allowing schools to make up missed days in 60 minute increments, so if the school decides to take that route, it's legal.

Bauxite is another that is taking that route. Bus picking kids up 10 mins. earlier, 50 more minutes (in essence, a class period) added to the end of the day.

Don't know how they are going to decide which class gets the extra period each day in the secondary schools, guessing they will probably rotate.

I'm a senior at Bauxite and it's frustrating as hell how they did it so irrationally. Teachers, churches, students, parents all found out on the Facebook page. I also spent three hours in the audiotorium wasting time for that shite PARCC test, and they think I needed another hour on my day. It's frustrating how they made it start earlier too. 10 minutes might not seem like much, but we have 6 people all trying to get ready at the same time and one little disruption of the morning schedule makes it a mad house. I'll be battling for the barthroom for sure.

Not to mention after watching the seniors brag in the past about how they don't make up snow days it blows so hard we have to make these up. Whatever I guess, I'm out in 8 weeks

Seniors are really mad about it. A lot of people were planning to check out on 3:15 and one guy was making shirts (got shot down quickly though, principal threatened him with in school suspension for the rest of the year). We also got news networks here, which was a pretty neat thing to see unfold (although they were probably coming anyway). There's nothing we can do about anymore though, so most of us are just in the frick the school mode. I tend to agree, so can't wait to get out lol.

This was done the same exact way.

Seems a little disrespectful honestly. We had 250+ student signatures on a rag tag petition (Bauxite is 4A, that's a damn good amount for just high school), so the whole "we didn't do anything like a meeting because we can't please everybody" narrative they've been running this is pretty lame, since they picked the option that pleased practically no one.

The biggest problem is kids with rural routes. You are asking some kids to catch the bus at 6am.

They could quit and leave the house at 6am to go to work instead.

I really don't feel sorry for many of them. When I was going to Sylvan Hills living in England I was waking up at 5:15 to catch the bus at 5:30. Not that big of a deal. Just go to bed.

You guys are cold.
How many of you have a nearly 2 hour (one way) commute to work every day?

Not much that can be done about it, but at least have a LITTLE sympathy for kids that have to ride a yellow dog for nearly 4 hours a day.
It sucks big time.

Bottom line is that you do what you have to do, but that doesn't keep it from sucking.

This whole thing is ridiculous. A kid's life is not going to change because they attended 5 less days of school this year. Just let it be and move on. No need to make up days at all.

While I agree with you in large part, it's also about financial accountability. Schools get money from the state and national government to fulfill a certain number of instructional and contract days for students and employees.

If you don't make them make those days up, schools could close at the merest hint of snow if they wanted to as a cost saving measure. What would stop a school from knocking 20 days off the school year then taking the extra money and funneling it into raises for administration or teachers?

I live in north Louisiana. We had several snow days and came up short. Instead of adding days at the end of the year, the school I teach at is taking away a couple of minutes away from lunch and a couple of minutes away from the transition time between classes. By the end of the year, we will have made up our missing time without inconveniencing anyone.

Teachers have been encouraged to work with kids who have classes on the other side of the campus, so increased tardies haven't been a problem. It's working well here. Just a suggestion!

I see your point, but I think a better check on that potential abuse, in a perfect world, is the firing of admins who try to take advantage of the system.

It's all about reasonableness, but unfortunately our society is full of grown children trying to run things so we need strict guidlines to follow or else they will abuse the system either intentionally or by their negligence/lack of intelligence. If society was still filled with responsible, reasonable adults, then we could just trust that reasonable, responsible decisions would be made without having to stand over their shoulder and count the minutes of each school day.

The school where I work in South Arkansas is adding an hour to the school day for one week in April. We are going Good Friday and another day that was supposed to be a holiday to account for the other 2. What really sucks is we were out one day when there was really no reason to, just no one wanted to make a decision to say "hey it's like 1/4 inch of snow and sleet and most of it is melted. Get your butt up and get to school".

really ticks me off.

Public school in the us is a complete joke. Even if you try to fail you can't.

Poor Arkansas is one of the worst states in the aforementioned train wreck. What does missing a few days matter? It's just pissing in the wind.
