Delete this stupid thread.

Since when do we care about a delusional made up story by a pizza delivery boy on orangebloods?

I agree with you Dr RC. Out of the Big 12 program they are third in realignment value, right behind OU and right ahead of WVU. The need for non-football content for networks might change the priorities the next few years so that Kansas becomes a clear #2.

And Kansas should jump at it. Just like Mizzou they were part of the forgotten five.

All Kansas offers is basketball and the city of Wichita and since basketball is only valuable during the month of March and Wichita is a Podunk town that makes Kansas worthless.

Adding Kansas would 100% force the SECN onto all basic cable packages in Kansas. That isnt adding nothing.

I agree that it isn't adding "nothing", but it's at least an open question whether it increases the pie enough to justify adding another mouth to feed. If bringing in Kansas increases the total payout, but DECREASES the per-school payout, then it's a bad deal.

There's roughly 94.1 million people in the SEC footprint. Divided by 14 members, that comes to each school being supported by 6.7M in population. I'd obviously like to use subscriber numbers instead of raw population, but I think it's a suitable proxy since I don't have the other numbers on hand.

Anyway, the state of Kansas has a measely 2.9M in population. Adding that school and that state would actually LOWER the average population per school to 6.5M. Now that's not a HUGE drop, and you can argue that the demand for the SECN might even be GREATER in Kansas than in the other SEC states because a much larger portion of interesting BBall games will be on that network than for football. So maybe they are willing to pay a higher subscriber rate. And maybe the status of the Kansas BBall program really does add a lot for advertising purposes and whatnot.

But I don't think it's a slam dunk they'd be a positive addition.

and PS, comparing the impact of Big East schools which are all small private religious based to a large state school like Kansas is just silly.

They're all basketball schools. Comparing them is justified.

Also, you seem to be ignoring the fact that adding Kansas would only dilute the overall SEC Network revenue PER SCHOOL (which is set to become the lifeblood of the conference in the future)

When the SEC Network launched, they had a goal of reaching a total of 75 Million households (Which they're close to). Out of those 75 Million, 28 Million of those households would be inside current SEC states. That means that there is an average of 2 million households per school.

The state of Kansas currently has a total of 3 million people which translates to a little over 1.1 million households (as of 2010 Census). Even if we were to assume that every household in Kansas had cable, it would still come nowhere near close to benefiting the conference.

So again I say; the state of Kansas is worthless. They would only dilute the conference payout (per member) if they were to join. I rest my case.

I am scared to death of Oklahoma. My best Aggie friend tells me I need to mentally accept them to the SEC one day, but I just can't. We benefit so much from them being locked into the position they are in. I almost hope Oklahoma State makes the playoffs or something near the end of the GOR so it is politically harder to dump them.

Well, OU dumping UTx to follow us might be worth whatever else happens, from a trolling standpoint.

I don't see it happening, though. If they ditch UTx, they will lose the red river shootout. They would be casting aside a huge portion of the history they have to rely upon to lure kids out of Texas. While their recruiting is "meh" nationally, it's better than anything else in the B12 other than UTx. Competent coaching should have them be a consistent 9-10 game winner, and that means there won't be enough dissatisfaction to drive a divorce from Bevo. Add in that they still have a "Grapes of Wrath" fascination w/ California and the PAC12, and almost as much disdain for the SEC as UTx (at least in their administration), and I don't see them being a member of the SEC as very likely.

But if that did, I don't think it'd be that big a deal. If OU actually ditched UTx, they'd still be in Oklahoma. That makes them a contender in North Texas, but still a distant second in East Texas and Houston. Plus, the split w/ UTx would damage both them and OU, so both would have reduced draw, relative to history. So in the end we might come out slightly ahead.

The ACC added Syracuse, a basketball power, but I think they joined because of football. If they weren't playing football, I doubt the ACC would have taken them.

I am skeptical that basketball will drive any future SEC expansion.

90% + of realignment moves are football program spearheaded more than anything.

UTex is so miserable in that joke of a conference, they talk realignment 24/7.
doing so keeps hope alive.
I don't blame em.
I'd be ill if four of the conference's best teams had taken off for far greener pastures, and we were still stuck in that dumpster fire.
