Anyone seen the promo for this yet? Looks like a behind the scenes look at Central High's football team. Lester "Patton's favorite receuit ever" Cotton was shown.
Looks good. Premieres Sunday at 10

What's so special about Central?
Serious question.

Central was once a powerhouse in football in 6A, but due to modern segregation they have fallwn badly. I think they won it all in 4A a few years back

They got fricked by zoning laws to where their zone is the ghetto.

I lived right by Central for two years. Used to here their games and band practice all the time. They hold a special place in my heart.

Due to desegregation laws, every child living in the city of Tuscaloosa all went to one high school, Central.
About 15 years ago, Tuscaloosa was able to be qualified to have multiple high schools. Two more were created: Bryant High in East Tuscaloosa, and Northridge High in North Tuscaloosa.
Central was left where it always was near Bryant Denny on 15th Street.
Obviously, the number of students dropped drastically. Further, Central now consists of kids from West Tuscaloosa. Let me put it this way: Central probably has a very large percentage of kids on free lunch.
With this,Central no longer has the entire community support.
An excellent high school program needs support from affluent folks and quality athletes from all walks.

Same thing happened to Trussville. When Clay and Trussville split, all the best athletes went straight to Clay and they won the state championship the VERY NEXT YEAR. Like what the frick.

Gotcha, but that has happened a lot throughout Alabama...the whites either built a private school or built another public school across town and left.

as big as Ttown was getting it needed more high schools. Central built a brand new modern school on the same site. Looks great. Same thing happened in Dothan as the city grew. City Of Madison outside of Huntsville now has 3 highschools. Hoover had one now they have 2. I have heard talk of Hoover building a 3rd HS in the future.

I was apart of the last freshman class where everybody went to C High, eventually graduated from Bryant.
As to the race issues, I had an opportunity to continue at Central because I was Pre-IB (Central would maintain it's IB accreditation, the new schools would not get it), but after the split, there were only 2 white people left at Central and my parents decided that Bryant and AP classes were the better option.

We still only have 2...crazy to think that a city of at least 40,000 only had 1 public high school until the new James Clemens school about 2 years ago.
But these are fairly new cities that already had desegregated schools, unlike Central.

Even back when Central was integrated, it was 60/40 black to white. I miss that school. C-HIGH!

I remember going to a Hillcrest-Central game in 1999. Central's run through banner read "6A, what were you thinking?" Hillcrest had just moved up to 6A. Hillcrest scored late and won 27-26. It was huge because Central ran Tuscaloosa. The team buses needed a police escort to leave the stadium. It was intense and fun.
I miss those days. Central is nothing now. TCHS hasn't been relevant since Higg left.
