Through the 70's and 80's we were the #2 program in the SEC behind Kentucky. Pretty sure we're still #2 in SEC championships and wins, though Florida may have passed us.
Save for the Dobbs years and the latter part of Gottfried's tenure, we were a consistent tournament team nearly every year. Granted, we didn't do much once we made the tourney, but making the tourney every year isn't really an unrealistic expectation given our history.
We have a decent basketball legacy that is overshadowed by our football program. But I wouldn't disagree with it being about on par with the Georgia program. At least y'all have made a Final 4, something we've never done.

Two years ago Bama looked like a tourney team but went to Auburn, lost 49-37, and only scored 14 points the entire second half. That Auburn team that beat them only won 9 games all season and lost 15 of their last 16 games - with the only win being against Bama.
If losing badly to a terrible Auburn team and thus missing out on the tourney (and that loss is probably what kept them out) didn't get him fired no level of blowout vs #1 undefeated UK will do it.
Keeping him around for the last couple of seasons has to have been a financial decision - either that or he's got photos of Saban, Battle, and the ghosts of Mal Moore and Bear Bryant partying with midget tranny hookers in a Pensacola strip club. No other explanation makes any sense.

Well, we complain about going to the NIT. From 1980-2006 we went to the NCAA Tournament 17 times. We expect to go to the NCAA Tournament.

His status hasn't even been a question with those that make those decisions(CM Newton, et al.) They LOVE him, results be damned.
Who knows if it will be after this season, but it should be.

There was some great basketball in the SEC in that era. Big names, and big crowds and what seems like now, more interest.Alabama,LSU,Tennessee and Vanderbilt at various times had some really good teams to either challenge or surpass UK.
Still, Kentucky:

Oh Wimp, WHY did you have to slap your secretary?
That reminds me of the Tshirts that you would see around Auburn in the early 90's..

Ironic that our best basketball coach and worst football coach in Alabama history both had secretary problems.

Give him time bro.. only Year 6...

SEC basketball in the 80's was pretty awesome, and Kentucky wasn't even that good for some of those years due to probation. Had a lot of characters at head coach as well. Durham, Brown, Sanderson, Smith, Fogler.

Not to rub salt in the wound, as I respect the powerful name that is Crimson Tide football. But it tells you something when former Ohio State RB Dan "Boom" Herron beat out T-Rich in for the starting RB in Indy. I figured he'd be an average back in the NFL, but as a Cleveland Browns fan, I thought for sure Richardson would have a much better career than Herron. Goes to show how much I know.

Don DeVoe and Norm Sloan, too. Durham and DeVoe couldn't stand each other which made for some good games between those two.
Really, only 1988-1989 did Kentucky have a clinker season.

A LOT of us did. The guy was like trying to tackle a golf cart when he was in the SEC. Hopefully he has some mentors or such who can have some fireside chats with him and turn him back around.

The way Bama stands behind the 3 point line and shoots ,they will be luck to get 36 against Kentucky on the road.

Why are we talking about Trent Richardson?

UK, Florida, LSU, and Arky are all on a different level that the rest of the conference IMO
Alabama is distant second in conference tournament championships and 3rd in conference championships. Florida and Arkansas have national titles so they're ahead of Bama. LSU and Bama are tied in tournament appearances and neither have a national title. Bama also leads the all time series 101-67. Kentucky is so far above everyone else that they can rightfully claim to have owned the conference.

But so many guys were defending him when you were 2-0 to start the SEC.

Nah, I think most hoped he had turned a corner because we like him personally so much. But he's just not a good head coach. Time to move on.
Posted on 1/28/15 at 10:04 am to SummerOfGeorge
Understandable, but it appears that I've won a bet with some bama buddies that they wouldn't make the tourney.
Posted on 1/28/15 at 10:05 am to CrimsonCrusade
I believe Alabama has a winning record against every SEC team except Kentucky, or at least the original 10 SEC teams. Not sure about Arkansas, South Carolina, Mizzou, and A&M.

I think we are as pessimistic towards basketball as we are optimistic towards football. Both with good reason.
