Nothing much to see here imo.
Marlin Lane was suspended during the investigation and Yemi Makanjoula was kicked off the basketball team (the Makanjoula rape allegation was common knowledge in Knox).

Did they know it was rape because it wasn't family?

Just kidding, not much of a story here

running back Marlin Lane was suspended from the Vols football team with no specific explanation from university or team individuals. Coach Butch Jones said only he was off the team for "disciplinary reasons."
since he was never arrested, charged, and the "victim" didn't want to press charges, seems like they handled it correctly

Never stopped UGA from kicking em off the team

so they suspended him until the case was over, there was actually an investigation done by the PD, and charges were never filed on Lane. Are we supposed to be outraged or something? Sounds like it was handled pretty well

Why the hell are football players having so much trouble getting laid?

I beg to differ and disagree that it was handled "pretty well". If a young lady having to just accept a crime being committed against her, being violated and then the prospects of being ostracized and shamed in her community and around campus is being handled pretty well then we're not doing things right as a society.
To not have to endure the added shame and publicity of being raped by a quasi-celebrity forces a girl into not pressing charges and not seeking justice, that is a shame. We all know the M.O. is to rake the victims over the coals, destroy their lives publicly, submit them to further baseless abuse from the fanbases, and once in the courtroom to shred them to pieces on the stand and question every decision they've ever made and to reveal their sexual history into public record.
I don't feel that letting another criminal get off scott-free is worth categorizing the situation as being handled pretty well.

This is only half true. Read the Federal or Tennessee Rule of Evidence 412.
That kind of thing is subject to stringent requirements, and has to be approved by the judge in a motion before it can be admissible at trial.
Anyway it doesn't matter that the alleged victim did not press charges, the district attorney's office is responsible for charging decisions and does not need a victim to "press charges".
This entire situation leaves an incredibly bad taste in my mouth, but I don't see what could have been a better way to handle it. If the D.A. legitimately and reasonably decided that there wasn't even enough evidence for probable cause then it's irresponsible to charge.
I will only have a problem with the way this situation has been handled if it comes to light that that the victim was coerced or there was a cover-up involved.
The article itself smacks of yellow journalism and irresponsible reporting. There wasn't even an arrest. If there's nothing to report, then there's nothing to report. Lane was suspended for two months pending an internal investigation. Don't see any point in saying, "Oh by the way, this guy is being suspended because of accusations of sexual misconduct.", when there wasn't an arrest or a charge.
Lane is not exactly a star player either, and Butch kicked off one player for domestic violence issues (wasn't charged), so it seems uncharacteristic of him to turn a blind eye.
There's a difference in not reporting to proper authorities which seems to have been done here and not making a media circus out of it.
