Saban smart to not pick a QB yet?

SDS thinks so...
If Saturday Down South's opinion is okay, I guess?
Though this line made me chuckle:
...
You guys weren't playing with quarterbacks all year? I mean, I knew Auburn started an extra running back instead, but still... :rimshot:

That’s especially important when considering that Alabama was one of only two teams in the Southeastern Conference to have a quarterback start every game last year.

He's done this in every season a new QB is slated to start.

On my drive in to work this morning I was listening to the Opening Drive and they were interviewing JP Wilson. I came in on him talking about exactly this: West Virginia doesn't know who to prepare for, etc. etc. etc. ... it's a great move.
I shite you not, literally the very next sentence on the show was Al Del Greco asking the following question: LSU has also not picked a starting QB and Les Miles has stated that it won't be determined until Thursday who will be the starter. As a Quarterback, would that put you in a bad situation?
JPW's response: Oh of course. You can say all the right things about how you practice as though you'll be the guy, but until you know you can't get comfortable and neither can the rest of the team. That could be a problem for LSU and their QBs as they start the season.
It's amazing how one sided these shows can be sometimes. They discussed the same situation, immediately back-to-back with one instance being Nick Saban and Alabama and one being Les Miles and LSU and determined, without hesitation, question, or second guessing themselves in the slightest, that one was a brilliant tactical move and the other was a huge mistake.
They didn't even draw a correlation between the two really, just mentioned them back to back as fairly unrelated topics.
Birmingham sports radio's usually good for a chuckle.

In defense of JPW, and ya know hes a Bammer so I have to defend him, I think he would say there was a difference between naming a starter publicly and telling the players who would start. If Del Greco had asked if Miles was also smart not to name a starter

Kind of a silly point since neither has much game time with Bama to make a game plan for. Also, you add the other element of a new OC in Kiffin. It wouldn't matter if he chose early in this scenario.

The game is one week away. I guarantee you Saban's picked his QB or decided on how he will rotate them.
The rest of us will simply have to wait for the game to find out.

Maybe not, but even Sims' limited playing time has shown that Alabama has a completely different offensive package that they have used with him in the past. You don't have to be a D-1 defensive coordinator to know that every minute spent in practice preparing to face an offensive package that you ultimately never see ends up being practice time wasted. Jacob Coker damn sure isn't going to average 6 yards a carry this year.

The Opening Drive is terrible. Can't believe it has lasted as long as it has. Now Finebaum is back on during my drive home...which really sucks and while Matt & Scott weren't lighting the world on fire, its so much more of a relaxed show.

They have to stick to the narrative.
