[saw this on another site]

List of things Ben Tillman did:

- Rose to power by leading the Hamburg Massacre, an event in which white supremacists raided a mostly black town and killed a number of black men.

- Called the Constitutional Convention in 1895 that disenfranchised black voters until the Civil Rights movement.

- Created Clemson by taking funding away from the University of South Carolina. He did this because South Carolina only represented the "elite" upper-class in the state and had allowed black people to attend school during Reconstruction. This nearly destroyed the University.

- Pandered exclusively to poor farmers in the upstate. This was his power-base, and was the reason why he created Clemson.

- Initiated economic policies that suppressed business and banking in the state. This set the state back economically and it has never fully recovered.

- Outspoken proponent of White Supremacy and Lynching.

- Assaulted another South Carolina Senator during his time in the Senate. This led to him being censured. He was also barred from the White House.

Yeah...I knew. If there is any school that should have an evil curse on it, it's Clemson.

That's Longstreet I thought? Tillman's statue is up front, closest one to the CSA flag I believe.

Hampton is on horseback. The statue of Tillman is on the Gervais Street side and it's a statue of him standing.

When George Washington Carver was invited to the White House, Tillman was quoted as saying "The streets will have to run red with the blood of 100,000 n*****s before they learn their place again." I may have paraphrased a tiny bit, but the gist (including the racial slur) is there; clearly he was a nice guy.
