HVAC Thread - Which Filters To Use

I've gotten different answers from different HVAC technicians on which filters are best to use. Right now I'm using the cheap ones and changing them out every 2 weeks. The office HVAC guy was just here and I asked his opinion and he said the cheap ones are terrible to use. He said to use the mid-grade ones and change them once a month during heavy use, and once every 2 months during lighter use.
Which do you use? Any HVAC guys care to comment?

I'm not an HVAC guy but I've always been told to use the middle of the range ones - ones that aren't fall-apart cheap but also ones that won't filter so much they slow the flow of air and possibly hurt the unit.
Seems OK so far. Depending on pets, etc, YMMV.

Not an expert, but here is what Ive heard.
It depends on the quality of your unit, old units that are prone to freezing and have low air flow, use a cheap one and change regularly. The better the unit, the better the filter. And if oyu have allergies, use a better filter

That makes sense. I have noticed the house is dustier since I switched to the cheap ones. Gonna grab some better ones this afternoon.
My 2 units are close to 20 years old, but the fans and coils have been replaced in both of them in the last 5 years.

If you don't have a 5" deep filter, then go cheap. Highly restrictive filters kill thousands of HVAC systems every year.
