the incentive, money wise, does not come from students.
as stated, it's probably cheap to have a basketball team. That's why many more small schools have a basketball team, and not a football team.
The SEC needs to have at least one or two, of the big teams (no offense to Kentucky ) to really put it together and go on a streak.
for the powers that be at schools, they've resided themselves to the fact that Kentucky will be good, so we'll let that be.
But just let a Bama, or an LSU, or a Georgia, or a Tennessee, get good, and I mean #1 seed often times good, and watch some feathers get ruffled at the other schools. The ADs at Auburn or wherever won't sit back and do nothing and watch Bama or Georgia go on a big time roll.

Add State to the care list. We just happen to be in a big rebuilding phase right now. For a while, we were one of the top teams in the league and competed every year. Stans just couldn't do much in the tournament. Trust me we all want to see the hump packed again. Also if you want to see rowdy lookup MSU Kentucky and water bottles...lets just say the refs really made it obvious they were giving the game to KY.

I've never been to Coleman Coliseum, so help me out.
It looks really big...Like TOO big. I don't see how you can generate an electricity throughout the crowd with that much open space. It has to dull the way the sound travels.

Yep, MSU loves their basketball. Like I said earlier some people such get sick of seeing a mediocre product, but I think they have the right guy for the job.
Great game. I was the SEC championship between MSU and Kentucky a few years ago when Demarcus Cousins hit that tip in to send it to over time.

Coleman is fine. The atmosphere was great just a couple years ago when we went 12-4 in SEC play and then a bunch of extra home games when played in the NIT.

Cal fought like hell to convince people MSU should have been in the tournament after that game though.

I don't understand why Alabama fans in particular have this reputation compared to other fanbases in the league. As recently as two years ago and most years Alabama has finished either 4th or 5th in average SEC attendance behind Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. In fact, we usually outdraw Florida who has had a much much better program over the last 10 years. That drops a spot now that Mizzou is in the league. Bottom line is that Alabama reputation for supposedly not caring about basketball doesn't match actual attendance figures and rankings compared to the rest of the league.

Yea truth but man that was heart breaking. We have always had good games against KY in the tournament. A few years before that we put them out because of a lane violation which gave us the ball and we drilled a game winning 3. I agree though, even less than 10 years ago the SEC was so much better. FL, KY, Bama, Arky, State, LSU, and Vandy were legit.

This is the real problem. A lot of the teams that have been traditionally good all seem to be down right now.

In the same way that Florida and Texas HS football players often look more developed than their northern counterparts, Northern b-ball recruits are just better players fundamentally. Without Midwest and NE recruits, the state of Kentucky will never see another b-ball championship. With them... well, they keep winning.

This just isn't true.
Cal's first class: 2 from Alabama (Cousins & Bledsoe), 1 from NC (John Wall), 1 from KY, and 1 from Oklahoma
2nd class: OR, 3 from FL, and 1 from VA
3rd class: IL, NJ, IN, and OR
4th: KS, AR, NH, TN
5th: 3 from TX, 2 from KY, FL, CA, and MI
The south produces a lot of top level D1 basketball talent.

1) Doron Lamb is not from Virginia, although he graduated from Oak Hill. He's from New York City.
2) The only time Cal won a national championship at Kentucky, the starting five were Anthony Davis, MKG, Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb and Marquise Teague: IL, NJ, OR, NY, IN
3) Cal almost won a national championship at Memphis on the backs of Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts, from IL and MI respectively.
4) On Louisville's national title team last year, the top nine players in terms of minutes per game came from, in order: WA, NY, Senegal, OH, VA, IL, KY, NY, IN
ETA: This year like 7 of the top 15 national recruits are from the B10's geographical footprint, and it's likely that none of them will go to a big ten school. The B12, SEC and ACC all stand poised to clean up, though.
ETA2: Also, that's not to say that the South lacks in basketball talent. I should have been more clear in saying that Northern players tend to be better developed by the time they leave high school, and that often carries over into their development at higher levels. Look at the difference between a Derrick Rose and a John Wall, an Anthony Davis and a Demarcus Cousins. The Northern kids just seem to have a bit of an edge in terms of development / experience. I've noticed this trend for well over a decade, fwiw. This year, despite super-talented recruits from every corner of the country, Jabari Parker has emerged as the most NBA ready.

And I do mean it's Bama's fault. Like it or not nonBama fans, a lot in the conference goes the way Bama goes for the big time sports. And since Bamas basketball has faded, other schools haven't done much either to push their product.
Jesus you really can't make this shite up

LSU and Tennessee can get rowdy when they're good.
This will be Tennessee's 9th straight year finishing top 10 in attendance nationally. Seven of those years we have finished in the top 5.

That would have been unheard of 15 or 20 years ago.
In the 80s and early 90s, that would have gotten you a top three seed in a regional.
Man do I miss Wimp....

This debate starts at highschool where football is king and coaches tell their players that if they want to play two sports, the other is going to be track.
I have no doubt that each SEC school has at least one or two sweet 16 quality basketball teams playing football right now, but you'd have to time travel back to their 6th grade year to change history and prove it.

In 92-93 none of those guys played except for Hollywood. The line up included McDyess, Rogers, Caffey, and Peck-Love.

Lsu doesn't care about basketball. They average like 300 people at their home games.
