Doesn't every school get a little piece of the pie if one SEC team makes it to the big dance?

All money is split 15 ways
Auburn, Bama, and LSU get the same amount as Kentucky and the SEC pocketbook.

Yes, but Alabama has a special rule that allows them to keep more in years when they play in the NCG.
REC gonna REC.

Yes, the money from every bowl team goes into a pot and is split between the 14 teams and the conference office.

Teams lose money on these things... Couple hundred personnel in Cali for a week.

That's a half truth ... only partially correct.
The way it works is that, depending upon your specific bowl-payout, you get a percentage of said payout which, by default, is larger if your bowl has a larger payout than another bowl.
For instance, if you go to the BCSNCG where the bowl payout is $12 million, and you're getting 10% of that ... then 10% of $12 million is naturally going to be substantially greater than 10% of an $800k payout.
Agreed?
It's not until AFTER each participating program takes their cut, their 10% from their particularly specific bowl, that the remaining balances are thrown into a pot and divided-up amongst all conference members, socialistic style, in a redistribution of the wealth so-to-speak.
