Bama and the HUNH

During the last couple offseasons all we heard was how the staff was making adjustments to stop the HUNH. However, we continue to get torched routinely by teams that snap the ball with more than 5 seconds left on the play clock. Is the 3-4 at the college level just not suited to stop these offenses? Obviously we don't lack the athletes on defense. LSU has had a good deal of success with their 4-3 scheme. What say you?

Well, we struggle with it but that isn't why we lost.
3 turnovers on offense, a key penalty on a punt return, horrible offensive line play, unspeakably bad play calling, they're as much to blame if not more so than the very poor defensive performance.

The main difference this year was bad corner play. They weren't as physical as years past and we had to play a ton more zone.
Plus they never could set the edge the way guys like milllner and Dre did.
Get you a couple of good corners that can play decent run sort support and the more simplistic hurry up runs are easier to stop

I realize we sucked in all phases tonight, but that doesn't change us getting smoked by A&M, Auburn, and Oklahoma.

There is one major first step. We need to add it to our offense. We need our first team to be able to prepare our defense for it and get our defense in shape for it.
Also look at our recruiting class we are adding guys that are ready to play and several leaner DL. We will have a deep athletic defensive line next year.
And finally our DBs on obviously must improve.

IMO, part of the problem is the lack of speed at DL. The DL just can't seem to get a consistent rush or have the pursuit to bail out questionable CB play.

Our defense isn't built to stop the teams that are good at it. It starts up front. We are big, powerful, and slow
1) they can't pressure the quarterback.
2) if they do pressure the quarterback they aren't quick enough to touch him
3) they get gassed. You can't expect 300 pounders to play with their maximum effort and capability when they're being run ragged by the offense. Utah did the same thing. They ran us ragged 5-7 yards at a time and before you know it the offense has run 12 plays in a 2 minute possession. It's more demoralizing to defense to give up 7 yards a pop on 15 plays than it is to give up 80 on one.
One is a fluke or missed assignment, the other is getting whipped and being unable to stop what's coming. That's where we are defending it.

Good point. If our offense isn't able to somewhat replicate it in practice, the defense will always get shell-shocked in the first half.
Also it looks like our defensive line never gets set before plays which contributes to the abysmal pass rush.

You are starting to see a change in the personnel the staff recruits on defense. The linebackers and defensive linemen we pulled in last year and are pulling in now seem to be a little leaner than the ones we have pulled in in years past.
I think over the course of the next couple of seasons you are going to see improvement in defensive play when we play these HUNH-style teams.

It falls on Kirby too. Oklahoma brought the house at AJ tonight and rattled him.
If Kirby chooses to bring 5 or 6 every play and sit in right man coverage then the outcome is different. Sure you're going to get burned every now and then, but you're forcing quick throws into tight coverage. There isn't room for error as a QB.
We just sat back and allowed him to pick us apart, and we lack the secondary to compensate for that.
We need quicker defensive lineman to defend teams like this, but we've had these guys all year. By now Kirby knows what they are and are not capable of. He performed as poorly as Nuss tonight

Maybe we just don't have the personnel in the secondary to successfully do that?
We definitely need a better pass rush and faster players out on the edges to compete with the HUNH.

The biggest thing is on why we struggle with it is because our D is very complicated. Saban/Smart to their credit try to get the "perfect" play every snap hence their checks etc. I don't know why we haven't done what we did in 2009 vs UF and went with the same 11 guys and focus on less sub packages/perfect plays and more on the just playing.

The first half was a disaster defensively, even more inexcusable than the Iron Bowl. Unlike the Iron Bowl, adjustments were made at halftime. The defense only allowed 7 points in the second half, and they gave the offense more than enough opportunities to win this game. All that said, allowing OU to convert after a 1st and 30 and the entire final drive was just sad. We will not be able to win any more national titles until we shore up the secondary and establish some kind of a pass rush. If this recruiting class develops properly, both of those issues will be resolved.

The defense just doesn't have the talent of 2009 or 2011 Alabama. Also, HUNH isn't the only offense that had some success versus Alabama. LSU and Georgia have had some success the past two season versus Alabama's defenses.

This is pretty much what i said in my thread that is getting torched right now.

allen, liner, and williams from last year are in the 240-260 lb range as de ... hand is about the same, maybe a little heavier ... dickson should be ready to step, us well ... we still have a lot of big, heavy dt on the roster who are not big enough to play the ng position, in addition to a couple this year, so i don't know what will be done with them ...
