Ohio State vs. Clemson 1978 Gator Bowl, Coach punches player.

A lot of people who read this message board are too young to remember this, but there was an hilarious ending to the Ohio State-Clemson game in the 1978 Gator Bowl.
Ohio State was trailing 17-15 with about 2 minutes left and was almost in field goal range. Ohio State threw an interception and the Clemson defender who intercepted it was forced out of bounds.
Woody Hayes, the Ohio State coach, punched the Clemson player in the throat starting a bench clearing brawl.
Woody Hayes got fired for that. It wasn't the first time he lost his temper. One time, he grabbed the referee's yard marker and broke it over his knee.
BTW, Georgia was the only team to beat Clemson that year, 12-0 early in the season. Vince Dooley later said that was an upset, but nobody knew how good Clemson was that early in the season.

I remember; UGA class of '75. Hayes was always a hot-head. I was glad to to see his punk arse get fired.

i was at that game. but back then w/o ESPN and the internet, we didn't find out what happened until the next day.

Me too. I turned to my dad when I saw it and said "Did Woody Hayes just punch that guy?".
I don't remember the announcers mentioning it at the time, not sure if they saw it or not.
