Is anyone worried the Tide may not be tested enough early on?

I was really hoping that we would get a good fight from Va Tech and I've always viewed these big kick-off games as great opportunities to better prepare the team for the rest of the season, but now with the falling out of the Hokies I worry that our young guys and new starters aren't going to get the adversity they need to gel and get their game legs under them early on.
Add to that the possibility that JFF may not play, even though that looks unlikely at this point. I just hope we can come together quickly without the benefits that a tougher schedule provides- see Notre Dame last year.
You just never know when a team will come out and kick you in the mouth, I just hope we will be ready for it.

Nope. I don't think Saban let's the guys play down to competition, like we did for years when playing lesser opponents. He preaches playing to a standard, and it doesn't matter what the other team does.

I don't mean playing down to our competition, I'm talking about being properly tested by good competition in order to break in the positions on the team. Notre Dame thought they had an amazing team but a lot was covered up by a weak schedule. I am not putting us on ND's level but we do have new personnel at key positions and you do not truly know what you have at that position until they face adversity. I am just worried that we don't have strong enough competition to better prepare us for when certain situations of adversity present themselves further down the road.

I don’t think it will take too much effort to get them ready to play A&M, most of the players playing in that game were their last year and they understand what they have to do to win.

I get what you're saying, but I think most of the positions of concern (Oline, Secondary) have been in the system long enough for it not to be to concerning. Besides, most of those guys have been practicing against better competition than they'll see all year.

I think you need to find something to do. You worry too much.

Trust me, I have plenty to do, and this is my only worry for the season. I'm definitely a posi-bammer, but this has been a legitimate concern of mine

VT is probably a smalls step down in competition than Michigan was and that's because of the injuries and everything those guys have been dealing with...IMO.

I get what the OP is saying. If a team has been blowing folks out every single week, you're not sure how the players will react, especially the young ones, when they get in a tight ballgame.

Yeah, I understand what he's saying as well, but I'm just trying to figure out when we're going to see that tight ball game. Tennessee? Doubtful. LSU? Maybe. We're going to smoke aTm, bank on it. Auburn may throw the kitchen sink at us, but talent will pull away by the second half. I think the first real test may not come until Atlanta, and if that test comes in the form of the Georgia Bulldogs, watch out.
Am I assuming much? Yes. Am I assuming too much? I don't think so.

We play VT game 1 and A&M game 2. Those are 2 pretty good tests to start the season IMO.

The LSU game will be a battle.

VT
A&M
Ole Miss (will be better this year)
LSU
a little hiccup down on the Plains dealing with that HUNH offense
SECCG
We will be plenty battle tested by the end of the season.

I agree with the OP. With the VT team seemingly falling apart, it's hard to see them really being a big-time test for us. If TAMU crumbles this year like many think and lose 3-4 games, we may look back on that game as not a stiff test as well.
So the concern is when you run into a team like LSU or UGA/USCe in the SECCG (or even a scary OM team) are you really prepared. The ND comparison was a good one, those guys are an 8-4 team in the SEC last year and they thought they were a legitimately elite team and got exposed.
