DE Da'Shawn Hand of Woodbridge, VA, considered the #1 player in the class of 2014, will attend USC's junior day Saturday. His coach, Karibe Dede, will drive Hand to Columbia Friday and they will stay thru lunch on Sunday. "He's excited for several reasons," said Dede, a former Auburn linebacker who faced the Gamecocks in Columbia during his career. "It's a great program and staff. And when you have a kid like Jadeveon Clowney who plays the same position, you look at it and say this is a program which has the means to develop a player of that caliber. He's also excited about playing in a great conference." Dede was just hired as the coach at Woodbridge seven weeks ago and has been trying to assist Hand his father in the recruiting process. And he's shared his experience at Williams-Brice Stadium with Hand. "The introduction at South Carolina is one of a kind," he said of the 2001 entrance. "That place is electric. I told him it's definitely a place you want to go to on gameday." Gamecock defensive line coach Deke Adams has taken an active role in recruiting Hand. The relationship dates back to last season when Adams was at North Carolina. "The familiarity between him and coach Adams presents a positive bond and relationship," Dede said. "Of all the people that's recruited him, coach Adams has gone about things the right way. He's genuinely interested in Da'Shawn. Coach has really reached out." Hand has also visited Alabama, Michigan and Virginia Tech. Hand has also mentioned Florida in his top five but his coach says is not limiting himself to just those five schools at this point. "He will go to as many schools as he can and then decide on official visits," Dede said. "We want to give him exposure to as many places as possible." The coach added that Maryland is also a possible visit for Hand, and he said other visits will be set up as schools reach out to them and invite them to campus. Dede said Hand has no leader and there is no timetable for a decision.

USC gets positive reviews from Hand clan
DE Da'Shawn Hand of Woodbridge, VA, rated by some analysts as the #1 player in the class of 2014, wrapped up a two day visit to USC Sunday and had nothing but good things to say about his experience. "It was a great visit," Hand said. "Clowney is a fun guy, very genuine, very honest. I liked the entire coaching staff. The food was amazing. As far as football related facilities, every college has them, some are big and some are small, so that doesn't faze me anymore. The Dodie was very nice. I could see myself studying there." Hand has also visited Alabama, Michigan and Virginia Tech and will visit Florida at some point. That is by no means a list of finalists as he will likely visit others. And he's not ready to start formulating a favorites' list. "I'm not comparing and contrasting," Hand said. "I'll continue to take visits and then compare. I'm taking my time, having and enjoying my life." Hand was joined on the visit by his head coach Karibi Dede and by Dede's teammate at Auburn, former Spring Valley linebacker Travis Williams. "I thought it was a great visit," Dede said. "They did a really good job of giving a full picture of the program. He met with a professor about programs he's interested in and toured the campus. The opportunity to hang out with the players, and with Clowney, I thought that was a unique opportunity for him. He met with coach Spurrier. Coach ate lunch with Da'Shawn and I think it opened his eyes about how great a coach he is. And coach Adams, it's obvious the players love playing for coach Adams and coach Ward. It was a great opportunity to see a school that will be competitive and have a chance to win the (SEC) East." Dede said he will be working to get Hand to more schools he wants to visit including Florida and back to Alabama. Later this summer they will narrow the list to the final official visits. Dede can't say where USC fits in right now but the visit did nothing but help the Gamecocks in his opinion. "In terms of just South Carolina, it was just a smash hit."

I think one of the determining factors with JD was that we play a 4-3 vs Gumps 3-4. In fact, he said as much. I would think Hand would take that into consideration, when setting his goals up.

Ohio State is recruiting him hard too. I think Bama and Ohio State have the best shot at landing him. UGA is recruiting him hard, but with a 3-4 defense he won't have a chance to shine like he would at, oh, say, South Carolina. If Spurrier can somehow arrange interaction between Clowney and Hand, make them twitter buddies or something, he probably is a lock at SC.
But Urban Meyer and Nick Saban know how to get things done too.
