…and saved the Crimson Tide’s perfect season.
On the rainy, cold, miserable night of Nov. 10, 1979, with No. 1-ranked, defending national champion Alabama locked in a scoreless game against LSU, every eye in the place focused on McElroy as he set up for a 27-yard field goal.
...
Even as the nation’s leading defense pounded LSU, quarterback Steadman Shealy struggled to maneuver Alabama’s powerful wishbone offense on the sloppy field. Twice in the first half, Shealy drove Bama close enough for field goal attempts. Twice McElroy missed.
...
When another Alabama drive stalled midway through the third quarter, McElroy and his square-toed shoe set up shop at the LSU 17 yard-line.
An instant after Barry Smith’s perfect snap, Umphrey placed the ball on the tee and McElroy stepped into the ball, which sailed through the uprights. Alabama 3, LSU 0.

This one was for you, Cholly.

A lot of people remember the close loss to #1 USC earlier that year, but few remember the close loss to #1 Alabama that same year.
While I wasn't at the game, I remember listening to it on the radio in NOLA with my dad while building model airplanes. His were always beautiful and flawless, but mine always seemed to fly better.
Just memorialized the 6th year of his passing last All Saints Day.
Here's to you Dad,
