Their defense isn't awful. It's not as strong as it has been in the past. last year it wasn't, either, but they had a great offense.

At it's best, which it's been for 75% of the year, this is our best defense since 2017.

It's also still inconsistent at times against the pass mostly due to busts at Safety, which led to the A&M game and the 2nd half against Arkansas.

It's the best, most dominate run defense we've had in 5-6 years. That's pretty much been consistent all year

Similar opponents
UGA gave up 34 points
Bama gave up 107 while playing their starters the entire game.

I don't like transitive but 4 games is telling. Bama is good. The best UGA will see all year but they have a hole. They give up points.

I haven't seen anyone do any kind of in depth study on this, but it seems incredibly hard to pair a stout defense like Bama/LSU 2011 and UGA 2021 with a hell on wheels, explosive play after explosive play offense.

McElroy talked about this on his radio show, that you really have to choose what you're gonna center your team around and the other side of the ball is gonna be downgraded. I'm not sure why it's so, as he didn't go into details. But that's certainly what it looks like.

At the beginning of the spring, we thought we were gonna be more like Bama the last three seasons. Explosive offense averaging 500 plus yards per game, 300 plus passing yards per game with JT throwing it around the field. Defense would be among the best, but not generational. By the time Clemson game rolled around, Muschamp had already told Kirby he thought the front could be the best he's ever seen. Kirby said he didn't really know how good it was until the Clemson game. JT's injury changed the philosophy.

Maybe Spurrier and Bowden's team were dominant on both sides a few years. USC and Carroll early part of this century? 2008 UF? Though offensively they were statistically stronger when their defense sucked the year before. Just hard to have both sides be elite, at least from a statistical standpoint.

What I was thinking, at least generally. Thanks for the clarification.

It says a lot since they are so young. This weekend would not be a good time for them to gell. (Jell?) Whatever. It wouldn't be a good time for all the pieces to fall in place.
