Yeah but then that guy can't drop back in coverage without a substitution, unless he's a truly special player. It's hard enough getting linebackers that can do it, much less a lineman.

Every league allows the defense time to substitute. And this is the problem I have with this slavish loyalty to the 3-4.

The offense will have five linemen, by definition, every damn play. That is by rule. How many linemen do you need to stop them ? Three does not seem to be enough, unless you are Georgia.

If they bring out five WRs - you can drop all eleven - it does not matter. You will not cover them.

Some bastard is going to trot out a base nickel coverage - two DTs, two DEs. That will shut down a lot of the runs you see now. Add LBs according to their backs and TEs, and DB for every WR.

Against an empty backfield, one LB and six DBs, single deep, and the LB delay blitzes every time. That will win - and the Air Raid goes to the dust-bin of football history.

Stop playing zone. It has to be man to man, with help up top. I can't tell you how many times, last night, I watched Vandy try to drop DB's into a short zone. If you really, really knew where Kentucky was going to throw the ball ... there's so many better ways to stop that route than having a DB cover grass.

Only if the Offense subs.

When you have dual role guys, like a linebacker that can play DE and Linebacker, combined with a "Star" which is a safety who can play linebacker, and you can have those guys on the field at the same time, and mix up the scheme without substitutions, cover multiple formations the offense will show, it gives your defense a very distinct advantage. Todd Grantham gets alot of shite but go watch his defense with 2012 UGA. The opposing QB doesn't know whether to shite or shine his shoes because everything is so disguised and there's not much to make from a pre-snap read. You don't know if that safety is a safety or if he's a linebacker, you don't know if that DE is coming or if he's going to drop back in coverage and the corner is actually going to blitz your blind side. And on and on.

Cover 1 has it's place and all defenses move in or out of it at some point in a game depending on a variety of factors. QB's are trained to spot Man to Man very quickly and options within plays are designed to destroy it. Many defenses play UGA this way, stuff the run and/or rush passer by overloading the protection, and make Stetson beat you in man coverage. Hasn't worked out for anyone this year, yet. Maybe Charleston Southern or Georgia Tech will expose us with something.
