Cause it becomes too predictable? I agree in general though. When there's little pressure on decent QBs, they can make milk toast out of you.
That's why I don't get it - and honestly, I know I hammer this to death. But I'm pretty sure I'm right.
3-4 gives you four LBs, from eight different angles, to rush. The main reason to use it. So why - rhetorical question - do these DCs then walk up one, and sometimes two, LBs to put their hand in the dirt on the line ?
We had that position back in the day !!! Called a DE !!! Bigger than an LB, smaller than a DT.
If you want to run 3-4 ... you can rush one LB every play. Doesn't have to be the same LB - or in the same gap. Or, you can only rush three and watch the QB slice and dice. I guess it makes these coaches feel better that they didn't get "burned".

If the offense is running the ball, then not stepping up the 4th or 5th guy is going to gut you.

Yeah but then that guy can't drop back in coverage without a substitution, unless he's a truly special player. It's hard enough getting linebackers that can do it, much less a lineman.
