You see the blonde third row up to the left of the trophy? She has crazy eyes. That girl will kill you, just look at her.

A&M is obsessed with tradition, it's that simple. We hate to move away from tradition and the Yell Leaders are a bedrock tradition.
A&M was basically all male and all Corps and small for the first 85 years of our existence. Since 1970 we have changed drastically and are one of the largest schools in the country (esp considering there are virtually no commuters) with about a 50/50 male/female ratio. Every year things change because of that and we adapt.
That said having Cheerleaders on the sideline is inevitable and will be a great thing. Back when I was in school the Yell Leaders would lead Yells constantly between breaks in the action. Now you have a DJ and videos that are doing most of that job and virtually everyone thinks it's much better. You have a Dance Team that is prominent at Basketball games and they hold the flags at the football intro. There is a competitive cheerleading squad that has won national competitions.
So the next step is actually having the cheerleaders on the sidelines. The key is going to be figuring out how they work with the Yell Leaders in a way that makes sense and honors tradition while also letting half the student body have a representative on the field. Personally I think that happens within 5 years.
Or were you looking for the "because we are gay!" answer?
Thanks for the great info. I give the yell leaders hell but I really am glad A&M is part of the SEC.
... if we could ditch that other team from your State, however. They seem to crap on everything they touch.

You literally just said they only fire the cannon. So only two of the “I know” you typed are correct.

Sorry we aren't going to tear down the statue of Lawrence Sullivan Ross who is one of the finest men the State of Texas ever produced simply because he was a Confederate General (who never owned a slave and also is primarily responsible for creating a college to educate freed slaves when many didn't want it). A&M doesn't exist without Ross and his influence on the school can't be overstated.

All I said was that it's funny your fanbase has such a fascination of phallic pictures that you always feel the need to post them, while also answering the OP's question about male cheerleaders. It seems that an aggie poster had a misconception that there were female cheerleaders on the field, so I graciously helped them out.
It's also incredibly ironic on multiple levels that a sip is trying to make fun of Aggies for being gay.

I think we can all agree that both schools put out serious homosexual vibes. A&M is probably a little gayer, but UT is right there behind them. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Because most aggies are ghey.

These guys are far more effective.

As noted earlier, there's no rule that yell leaders have to be male. It's an elective office. Someday, there will be a chick elected, but it will definitely take the right personality.
I don't think you'll see cheerleaders/gymnasts on the sidelines at Kyle Field in my lifetime. We don't do "cheers," and if all you want is eye candy, we could find a way to incorporate the dance team. The problem for the dance team is that they need the right music to work with, and their lack of compatibility with the FTAB is one of the reasons why we have a different band for basketball and volleyball. The FTAB isn't going anywhere, so, if the dance team is to be on the sidelines, do they bump and grind to the "Theme from Patton" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," or do nothing? I think we might see them during the first quarter break at some point in the future, but having them spend the entire game on the sidelines would require answering the above question first.
The whole deal about having girls on the sideline is really for TV. In a large stadium like Kyle, for all I can tell from my nosebleed seats, the cheerleaders for the opposing team could all be "non-binary" individuals with moustaches. They really are a non-presence unless you are in fairly close range.

We don’t cheer at games- we yell. We have guys that lead that. If we want to elect a girl to lead that, we will, but we’re kinda funny about tradition.

They only recently allowed women in the school at all. A&M has a weird dislike of all things female
They have only been allowed for the past 58 years. Women were allowed to enroll starting in 1963. They also make up the majority of the student body. A&M's current enrollment is almost 73,000, one of the largest in the nation and largest in the SEC.

I'm not angry at all, just once again pointing out how you don't know what the hell you are talking about and spread a lot of misinformation. You are the most agsessed member of this board and spent years here to talk about A&M while your team has been in the B12. If anything I pity you as you seem like a sad person.
Ross was also not nicknamed "negro killer". He fought and won one battle against an all black unit and some writer made that comment. He was very much celebrated by the black and freed slave community after the War as well. He only fought for the Confederacy because he was a Texan and he fought for his home like many others. He was not a rich man but he was certainly wealthy enough to own slaves had he wanted to but he did not. In fact he adopted an Indian child that was orphaned after a battle Pre-Civil War and raised him as his own. He was a truly great man and a great Texan. Sorry you are so ignorant of history.
The "blacky" comment was certainly poorly spoken. The guy was simply trying to say we should focus on being Aggies and not on race and as he is an old dude who isn't exactly PC he said something stupid. The things being said by the protestors were also horrible, including college athletes pushing and threatening violence on men in their 60's and 70's. Overall a bad scene.
You love to post things about A&M being gay while your school has always had a strong and vocal gay community. Personally I don't care, let people be who they are, I just don't get your point. Actually that isn't true, I do see it I just recognize how stupid it is.
In the meantime, do you think Texas can avoid further humiliation this weekend and avoid Kansas beating your arse at DKR (speaking of racists) this weekend?

The student body (majority women) could vote on women as yell leaders.
They don't, because at A&M, we know its best for men to be in leadership, not women.

The Texas A&M Cheer Squad is an all-girl intermediate competitive cheerleading team that attends several competitions throughout the fall and spring semesters. Practices are Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday nights with additional fundraising and team bonding events throughout the year.
The organization will not cheer at any athletic department events nor respresent itself as an official spirit organization of the university. The purpose of the organization is to provide the participants with the opportunity to compete in the Collegiate Division of state and national competitive cheerleading competitions.
I got it from the Aggie website
