Well, so far for society he's killed a young woman and a dog. There's zero evidence that he'd be more good for society than being in prison. The average drunk driver has driven drunk over 80 times before their first arrest. The problem we have right now is not being harsher on the majority of crimes being committed.

It’s likely the state had some shortfall in their case. Custody chain, evidence, etc.

I’m guessing the second this deal came across they accepted it knowing it was a gift.

Spending anytime in prison is a wake up call. I really hope this changes his life and he comes out and does some good.

I know he killed a young woman and a dog because his reckless and careless behavior while driving drunk at speeds of 156 mph. He murdered someone. He should be in prison for a very long time. 3-10 years is a disgrace to the victim and the victim's family and all those whose lost loved ones to drunk drivers.

Just my opinion, but 3 feels light. 5-10 feels about right for the “have to learn your lesson and better not ever do it again” punishment, but it doesn’t bring the woman back and wouldn’t be deemed as fair punishment for the destruction he caused.

In these cases of absolute recklessness and stupidity, I lean toward how much to make sure he doesn’t do it again vs. fairness based on damage done. In intentional murder cases, I lean toward fairness to victims vs. ensuring they won’t do it again.

Any repeat DUIs for him should be long prison time though. As George W. would say “Fool me once…..fool me can’t fool me again.”

A woman was killed and people keep mentioning the dog. Who cares about a dog? How is that even relevant? If dude had only hit and killed a dog that night we wouldn’t even know about it.

I suspect 3-10 is a longer than normal sentence for a felony DUI resulting in death and misdemeanor manslaughter in Nevada. Either way that’s the deal that was offered, so it’s what the state considers just.

Because we're discussing what he did and how in possibly three years he could be walking the streets living his life while the person and animal he caused to burn alive are gone forever. If my sister and dog we're both killed by a drunk driver I wouldn't say he just killed my sister, I'd say he killed my sister and the only other thing I love on this planet. I'm not saying the dog's life matters more than hers but it's still a living creature that burned alive because of a drunk driver.

Well if you boys feel so strongly about it you can quit your job flipping burgers and become a lobbyist for MADD. But for now you're just a couple of whiny losers crying on the internet (actually a troll and an alter on a CFB board; top tier losers).

That's like 95% of posters on tRant. It boggles my mind that people spend their time trolling and creating alters on an internet message board.

I think 10 years of extreme probation plus 60% of all his earnings go to compensate the victim’s family would be a better form punishment and justice for all involved.

I come here for recruiting news from a solid few posters. I don't have much to add except to thank them for their dedicated work so I don't often post. But seeing the lack of compassion in this thread for victims of DUI drivers is disgusting. Maybe you'll feel differently if a drunk driver kills a loved one you know and then in 4 years they are back at home with their family like nothing happened.

Ruggs will now learn whether it'll be closer to three or 10 years in prison at a sentencing hearing on August 9.

Clark County district attorney Steven B. Wolfson said of the ruling Wednesday, "This outcome accomplished our three most important goals: (1) convict Henry Ruggs of the strictest charge allowed by Nevada law for drunk driving; (2) send Henry Ruggs to prison; and (3) eliminate his ability to appeal his conviction and prison sentence."

Wolfson added, "Tina's family members are the most important people in this process, and I met with them several times before reaching this resolution."

There's another component to sentencing. It's not just about fairness to victims or ensuring the offender doesn't recommit the same offense. It's also to send a message to the rest of society that this will not be tolerated. Ruggs' sentence woefully fails in this regard.

I haven't gone out and committed any dui manslaughters since my state gave Stallworth only 30 days.

Hold on a damn minute! So, you think the sentence Ruggs received is just? What exactly justified you chastising the poster?

Two drunk illegal aliens hit my daughter head-on and killed her three years ago. I will say you have to let your anger go and forgive, because if you don't it will eat you alive. As far as Ruggs if he is truly sorry and takes his time in jail to rehabilitate his life and never does this again, then I could see it being a well justified sentence.

If he gets out in a few years and does get a DUI he needs life without parole.
