My hope is that Oats recognizes and rectifies the roster issues from this year through recruiting (check) and the portal (TBD).

There are plenty of tough arse, chip on their shoulder leader types that will be in the portal and can transform the mental makeup of our roster. I do think Oats CLEARLY understands this and is going to attempt to rectify it.

Will it work? I dunno, we'll see.

I thought the 2nd half today looked like old Gary

He played one of his best games in a hot minute today. I think his role can be set in stone if he works on that 3 point shot non stop in the off season. An outside shot is really the only thing holding him back from being perfect for the system. Blue collar everything else

My exact thoughts as well.

Not sure what he’ll do or what route he’ll take, but he HAS to know and see it.

Anyone who said anything negative about Oats and staff got slammed by most people on this board until today.

I tried to raise this issue early in the year and caught so much sh&$ that I didn’t post again until today.

He sure needs to get better at identifying “fits” in the portal. We have struggled

I think we could be more creative defensively but this was a horrid defensive roster. I mean absolutely fvckin horrid.
Yeah, and it wasn’t even expected to be a great defensive team. Solid, a step back from last year certainly, but not great. Turns out we were just trash on that side of the ball, and Herb Jones just provided more cover than we realized for a lot of below average defenders.

On offense, we were supposed to be elite. Instead, we were just good, only because nobody on the roster (including the three sharpshooter guards returning from last year) could consistently hit even the NCAA average from 3-point range.

Only thing to do is flush this year down the toilet, bring in some guards and wings who fit the system (rangy, 3-and-D), which we have a good start on with Burnett and the incoming class, a creator at PG, roll them out there and see if the persistent ball security, shooting, and defensive issues were personnel or coaching. I hope it’s the former.

I do think he knows what he wants his roster to look like physically and will not allow a roster makeup season like this to ever happen again.

I hope so. Besides the MG-AG-AJ comparisons, This complete, catastrophic collapse also reminds me of Dubose’s last stand.

You can’t worry about that shite. Share your thoughts and if folks wanna blast you, let it happen. George was hesitant on Oats last season, especially at the beginning and he had every right to be pissed.

Yep - honestly it's going to suck waiting until November to find out, but it's all we're gonna be able to do. We won't know until then.

Maybe some hints from the portal additions and roster changes, but how it all plays out will be up in the air until we see it on the floor.

Well, that’s a little extreme.

It was Gottfried-esque.

This was a good basketball team. They just lacked leadership on the floor, and didn’t handle adversity well. That tough OOC schedule was supposed to make them mentally tough, but appears to have done the opposite.

My God these get rid of oats peoplevwho pop in after every loss kill me. Also frick Pearl ... Glad we didnt touch him and when smith and kessler are gone next year theyll be at best the 5th best team in the league. Again, our roster will be completely different next year .. 5 recruits, gary, bediako, and gurley, burnett, and a portal guy or too. This overhaul nonsense is stupid to discuss because its happening anyway.

People want to blame Oats, alright let's play a game. Who do you want back from this roster next year? I genuinely want Bediako and of course Burnett back. The rest? Eh. So the whole "wasted talent" take doesn't really fly.

JQ and Shack are undersized and were abused on defense all year. JQ's shooting numbers came back down to average as well. JD wasn't the guy we hoped for, he was all "potential." Ellis didn't take the jump we hoped for. Gary isn't a fit and it became abundantly clear after his injury. Miles gets labeled with "potential" as well but looks lost half the time on the court. Rojas, for all the talent we apparently have, gets way too many minutes. Hopefully, another offseason for Gurley will make him a more serviceable rotation player next year. Tchikou was a bust due to injuries. Holt was never expected to play, if he can starting making shots then who really knows but at least he brings effort.

There was no leadership on the team this year, it was made clear when two of our upperclassmen were suspended for our exhibition game. We've heard rumors these guys don't really like to train (this came from talk at REC meetings), and the loss of our guys from last year were a bigger impact than we expected.

I'm pretty excited to gut most of this roster. We have a true PG coming in, a lot of length and talent, a couple of shooters, and some big guys that can play above the rim. Let's tackle the transfer portal hard and get another ball-handler, shooter, and maybe a stretch 5.

Edit: This doesn't mean Oats is without criticism, obviously there are some very valid critiques.

The way we played throughout the end of the season,it would have been a miracle to win any game in the tournaments. Only luck could have won us anything. We were lost on offense. defense and leadership. Helter-skelter on both ends and in the head. Oats has definitely slipped this year too.I think he had too much unwarranted faith in the players.
Another disappointing season in Basketball. It's going to be a long wait till December. Adios, fellas.

You’re right about that.

I’ve followed Alabama basketball since CM Newton was coaching and know more than a little about college basketball and what it takes to have a successful program.

Last year got me very excited about the direction of the program, but 2 weeks into January, anyone with any sense could see that there was a problem with this team.

Starting in February, you could see that the coaching staff had no clue what to do with the roster. I thought they had it fixed, but obviously, it was just a weak schedule that gave us hope that the team had turned the corner.
