We stuck our necks out to hire him after the mess at Maryland, and it clearly has not worked out. No there’s not a lot of talent to work with, but his defenses have consistently played to (or below) that talent level. We need someone who can get our defense to punch above its weight

THIS is precisely my point. I'm by no means claiming Ole Miss has national championship talent - not by any stretch of the imagination. But the idea that Ole Miss possessed the 2nd to the worst defensive talent in 2020 is ludicrous. Where that talent ranked exactly - I have no idea. But this year Durkin has at least "average" talent nationally, IMHO. Perhaps not average to the SEC, but certainly they are more talented than they performance indicates. We all have our own "eye tests," and mine suggests the Ole Miss defense is very poorly coached. WAY too little containment (a coaching thing), very poor tackling (partly a coaching thing), and blown coverages time and gain (a coaching thing). I just see nothing that suggests Durkin is getting the most out of his players.
