How A&M's culture works against us

As cadets, you're taught that, if the team loses, it's YOUR fault because you didn't yell loud enough to motivate them.
This leads to a mindset among old ags that gives more leniency to coaches and players than should be allowed.

I know some of the old Ags that matter and I can tell you this isn't the case. They are supportive until it is time not to be supportive. I do think there is some perspective though that making rash decisions can be very dangerous though. Pushing out Emory Bellard for Tom Wilson was a disaster. Going after Fran because he was the shiny object was a disaster.
Look at our friends in Austin that pushed out DKR and then Mack Brown.
I do think that the BMA's are not so much lenient as they are careful. They know it is very easy to make something that is a minor problem into a major one and that is much more easily done than just buying coaches. I can tell you exactly what they would say if you complained and said Jimbo sucks, "Ok, what's your plan?" If your plan is let's fire Jimbo and promote Elko or hire some far less proven coach assuming they will do better don't expect them to take you seriously.
As for players I do agree that A&M's culture is to try to always be supportive though that has been far from pure. I remember "Let him play" tshirts with Reggie McNeal and there has always been bitching about player performance. I don't think booing our players like OU has done with Rattler is productive. The A&M approach is to hold the coach responsible and not the players, the players are responsible to their coach and teammates. Mainly it is just unseemly to pile on 18-22 year old kids that are almost always doing their best. That ire should always stay on the 50 something year old guy making millions to be in charge.

We have historically held onto bad coaches for too long. And our athletic department has tolerated mediocrity for decades. Fran should have been gone after 77-0. Sumlin should have been fired the minute the plane touched down after 59-0. No coach ever recovers from losses like that. And giving Jimbo an extension was idiocy.
The same for basketball and baseball. Childress should have been fired 5 years ago, and we kept Kennedy way too long also. If Buzz doesn’t have us in the tourney by next year, he needs to be gone also.
Every school in the SEC gives a coach 3-4 years, and then they move on. You know what you have by then. I’d give Jimbo one more year after this one, but we can’t do that. We are stuck with him.

We are actually a lot less stuck with Jimbo than we were with Fran. We can buy Jimbo out if we need to even though it would be painful. The Jimbo extension was a calculated risk and if it doesn't work out then Bjork should pay the price. That said I think it is way too early to panic about Jimbo, way too early.

We are stuck with Jimbo because we couldn’t pay for his buyout in any way. Besides, who’d we get after we fired him?
No, all he has to do to cash his check, babble in interviews, and act like he is building something.
He ain’t doing shite, and this program will never be more than what it is. It is who we are.

We paid Fran $4 million, half of what we owed him, to go away after we got all sanctimonious about some bullshite. How were we stuck with him? And how does that even begin to compare to being on the hook for $80 million with jimbo?

We owed Sumlin the entirety of his remaining contract within 2 months of his firing.

What the fuk ?
I think it was a panic move on his new contract. There was some smoke from Sumlin's agent about USC being interested in Sumlin. They NEVER were. It was laughable.
Not going to be said around here but a lot of people on this board were worried about Sumlin leaving and were in FULL support of Sumlin's new contract.

Dollars owned are only relevant in comparison to dollars made.
When we fired Fran the AD was literally having to take out loans in order to operate. The 2000s were dark. Hell there was talk about REDUCING the size of Kyle.
Now we are making about $50 mill per year in profit and going up. We have now crossed the threshold in terms of having the big classes that began in the '80s and '90s hitting prime donor years and a season ticket package with the SEC plus Texas is going to continue to have value long term.
Of course we aren't going to fire Jimbo next week and crank out a check for $90 million nor should we. That would be an insane thing to do. We will however be in a position that if we really had to we could fire him in the next couple of years. Understand though that if that happens Bjork is likely fired right next to him for pushing for that extension. We may have the money but there will be severe consequences for being irresponsible with it.
Compare that with LSU which is losing money and unless they start winning big they could be losing a lot more soon. Of course on tRant if you bring up LSU's money issues they get VERY upset and deny but the reality is they are overstretched and in real potential trouble. They don't have a bunch of really big dollar guys that can just bail them out endlessly and the demographics of Louisiana and LSU grads is not going in the right direction. They have to win.

Bjork has been a terrible AD across the board. Schlossnagle was out of his hands.
We seem to never be able to get an AD without at least one significant weakness.
Groff: bean counter who didn't value facilities
Byrne: overpaid for sports that didn't make money
Hyman: no redeeming qualities
Woodward: waiting for LSU to be available
Bjork: not sure what he does well

Bjork is really good at being an SJW.
Oh, I just realized you said redeeming qualities...

Guilty here, lots of us were desperate to keep him because we thought we hired a great coach and to stay relevant we had to show we couldnt get out-moneywhipped by other schools.
I was one of the first off the Sumlin train though (midway through 2015 season) and could see what was coming, it just sucked he hung around another couple of seasons.
I definitely dont like the Jimbo extension, at 7.5 mil a year with all of it guaranteed and tons of time left on the contract, I dont think there was anybody that was going to pay more than that, and if they were, then we match it. I think the AD got played on that one.
