I don't understand the mental errors. Defending the option is merely assignment football. You do YOUR job, and let everyone else do theirs and you stop it dead in it's tracks. The interior DL has the dive back, tackle him every time. The DE/OLB has the QB, and your job is make the QB pitch the ball, then kill him anyway. The CB has pitch responsibility, turn it back inside where your help is, keep outside leverage and tackle him. The ILB is supposed to be scraping along the line following the QB until he picks his poison and either leaves it with the dive back, keeps it, or pitches it and you clean up the play. Our ILB were out of position and the OLB's kept turning their shoulders in to the QB.

IMHO, all our offensive problems come back to the poor offensive line play. Bryce didn't get knocked around a lot, but he was constantly hurried and never was very comfortable back there after the 1st quarter. And the running game couldn't get in on 1st and goal from the 1. We're all bitching about lack of explosive plays and playmakers, but folks, you can't run long, slow developing patterns if your OL can't keep the defense out of the backfield and if you can't run the ball, they don't have to respect that either. So they can tee off on your QB all day if all you can do is run short and intermediate routes and they don't respect the run. Some people up front better grow up and grow up fast, because they are getting manhandled up there and it's disrupting the whole offense. We need alphas on O to step up and get people pulling together.
