In 1950, the NC was decided before the bowl games were played...bowl games were just for fun.
It was probably that way throughout the 1950s.

But this brings up another question. OU only claims NC from AP. Since we are joining the SEC, should we claim the others?
Various organizations have named National Champions in college football since 1869.Utilizing the selectors as recognized by the NCAA, Oklahoma has been recognized for 17 different seasons: 2003, 2000, 1986, 1985, 1980, 1978, 1975, 1974, 1973, 1967, 1956, 1955, 1953, 1950, 1949 and 1915.

I can't believe I am going to say this but I am going to defend Alabama and some others here on this particular post.

Most of Alabama's questionable titles were pre-AP and UPI. I do not believe they claim any of these non-wire service titles after the point that AP and UPI started their polls.

Claiming non-wire service titles after the wire services started awarding them is suspect, but claiming titles after the BCS era started is even more suspect.*

* - I would issue an exception for USC in 2003 and Auburn in 2004. I don't know who would have won in a USC / LSU matchup in 2003 but I am confident that USC would have easily beaten Auburn in 2004.
