Just because a selector names a program a national champion doesn’t mean they get a national championship for that year.

Pre-AP titles are not recognized by a lot of people, especially media. Schools will claim what they want to. But it is known that pre-AP claims usually centered around playing in the Rose Bowl. Although there was no official selector before 1936, the Helms Athletic Foundation and National Championship Foundation are widely considered the most recognized.

Since 1936 and 1950, the Associated Press and UPI/Coaches/BCS titles are the most recognized selectors. The National Football Foundatuon (MacArthur Bowl) and Football Writers Association of America (Grantland Rice Trophy) are second tier honors but programs do recognize them as adding them to their totals. BUT they are not as legitimate as the AP and UPI/Coaches/BCS.

There are programs who claim titles who don’t officially have them but should have them. That’s another subject on its own.

Programs to claim titles in the AP era that were not awarded by the AP or UPI:

1938 Tennessee
1939 USC (claimed in 2004 offseason)
1941 Alabama (Bama fans here don’t like it)
1942 Georgia
1947 Michigan
1950 Tennessee (they should have it)
1952 Georgia Tech
1958 Iowa
1959 Ole Miss
1960 Ole Miss (deserved it)
1961 Ohio State
1962 Ole Miss
1964 Arkansas
1966 Michigan State
1970 Ohio State

This is how I know you are not a true Oklahoma fan. This BS about the pre-AP/UPI and Rose Bowl is pure Alabama talking points.

From your post history I am 99% sure you are an Alabama fan. You may live in OKC.

It’s not an Alabama thing. Do your college football research. I’m not crediting Alabama with pre-AP titles. They don’t need my input anyways. There are publications out there that credit the Rose Bowl as being a showcase at times for the best teams in the nation. That’s why some programs will claim pre-AP titles. I’m not claiming it for them. It’s kind of like the current HBCU Celebration Bowl in Atlanta. The MEAC vs. the SWAC for the de-facto national championship.

Also, I’m a die-hard OU fan. Who’s to say you’re really an OU fan? Have you been to any games? Did you graduate or attend the university? Or is it because UNC is terrible at football that you need to latch onto someone that is consistently good?
