College Football hasn't been amateur since the SMU days.

I can understand that point, so you have moved it about 18 or so years before the BCS era. That was still the era before the Boom in TV revenues, in those days a few 5 star recruits got money to come to your school. But now, you are talking about NIL for any player on your team and transfer portal. But yes, it has been moving that way starting in the 1980's but has accelerated the last 20 years.
