You can build in enough tiebreakers that it would work itself out most years. I can only think of a few years in which there wouldn't have been a "regular season champ" since the SECCG was introduced.

Sorting it out “most” years is a pretty low standard, and with the difference between conference champ and #2 being a bye week vs playing an extra game, the stakes are too high to not get it right. Murphy’s Law says what can go wrong, will.
