I disagree. They are harmless with the playoff system. If Vanderbilt somehow went 13-0 this year, they are making the playoff even if people thought they were ranked 112. The preseason rankings are fun.
I mean, don't you enjoy to see Texas, Michigan, and Notre Dame start out top 10/15 and collapse?

If Clemson, OSU, OU, and Oregon all start at 1-4 and Bama starts at 5 and all of them go undefeated then there is a strong possibility that Bama would not get the bye week just based on where they all started in the preseason. That's not harmless. That's costing the Tide an extra game which takes time and energy and opens them up to injuries while playing a fresh team coming off a bye.
