Hell. if it was up to Bama they would have hired Rich Rod instead of Saban
Coaching searches are pure luck from multiple angles
People of ignorance continue to think this is true. There was group who was afraid to wait for Saban, thinking it may not pan out and that they would miss their opportunity on other coaches. However, Saban was Mal's target. He was always Mal's target, and Mal was in charge of the hiring. Alabama hired Saban, and for some odd reason, the fact a few people wanted to rush and hire someone else for a moment makes LSU get all hot and bothered to this day. Let it go.

Mal's top two targets were Spurrier and Saban.
Spurrier was the first contacted because Moore knew him and Spurrier wasn't interested.
Saban refused to talk to Alabama until the NFL season ended so Moore moved on to Rich Rod and offered him the job.
In a sense, both are true, Saban was one of the first options but Alabama would've hired Spurrier or Rich Rod had either of them wanted the job.

So once again, luck played a huge part just like in every coaching search
