Do we really need to have a breakdown of why "winning records" in 2020 are different than "winning records" in other years based on the makeup of the schedule?

They aren't if you just compare SEC records vs SEC records.

There are a finite number of teams that can have winning records each year.

2020 - 5 (Alabama played 4 of 4 possible)
2019 - 6 (LSU played 4 of 5 possible)
2018 - 6
2017 - 5
2016 - 4
2015 - 7

More teams with "winning records" generally just means there were more gawd awful teams that went 1-7 or 0-8. It doesn't mean that there were more "good" teams.

Combined SEC Winning % Opponents not including games vs themselves
2019 LSU - 53.1% (34-30)
2020 Alabama - 57.7% (56-41)
