WARNING - ***** incoming wall of text ****

ugly 3 games in Austin. 2/21 risp on the weekend through the 8th inning Sunday. have no idea if that improved in the 9th when USC plated 2 runs. 6 runs total in 3 games for Carolina.

Gamecocks hit 4 would-be home runs today, but only Clarke had one of his go over the wall. Texas' ballpark doesn't play like any other ballpark in the SEC, thank God.

Longhorns defense was timely all weekend killing any crooked numbers USC was close to putting on the scoreboard. Carolina's failure with risp only mounted the pressure our pitching seemed hell-bent to create for itself. Gamecock fielding on Sunday felt left out and joined the self-destructive efforts just for good measure.

there were some good individual performances and if Farr & Jordan can have Friday/Sat outings consistent with what they showed in Austin, USC will win some SEC weekends if the offense/lineup gets it collective shite together.

Brady Allen continues his reliability at the plate. I'd be fine if he actually hit 2nd in hopes of advancing a leadoff guy. Wimmer was 4/4 Sunday but is. I'd be interested in seeing him lead off a bit more. his speed/ability to bunt for singles - along with Allen's contact/speed behind him in the lineup could work in tandem well. Wimmer (6) & Allen (7) have 13 total doubles and 70 total bases combined.

the only games Clarke should catch are the mid-weeks from now on. Cino midweek looks as well. Burgess all SEC weekends / rest through the week.

Callil's anemic bat in the lineup has to be replaced to see if it sparks anything in the offense. Wimmer hasn't played SS yet and he's got 3 errors in 43 chances, but Callil's bat with runners on so far this year is a big concern. he's struck out 14 times compared to 10 hits (47 AB). Callil has walked just twice and only Fields has a lower on-base % in his 4 total AB on the season. I don't know how much run Wimmer got in fall ball at SS and it could prove be a disaster defensively, but Callil's bat in the lineup last year and so far this year is a known commodity. Wimmer's defense at SS is not - at least in a game. Davidson tuesday would be a good time to find out.

blind dart at the dartboard for tuesday's lineup...

Wimmer SS
Allen CF
Clarke DH
Sightler LF
Eyster RF
Satterfield 3B
Mendham 1B
Burgess C
Heinrich 2B

Satterfield was hitting over .400 as 7th/8th in the lineup in all his AB this season before he was moved up to the 2 hole on friday in Austin. he went 0/8 on the weekend vs Texas in the 2 hole. it didn't work so move him back down but he has to play over Milone's bat & 3 errors at 3B.

Heinrich only has 7 hits in limited AB, but at least has more hits than K's with 5. Eyster has always had a high K rate and leads the team with 19, but does have 17 hits, 9 for extra bases including 3 HR. of course the 2 walk-offs.

Burgess & Mendham both have on-base % near mid-300. Burgess has just 4 strikeouts in 31 AB to go with 7 hits. Mendham just one more strikeout than hits but is tied for 3rd on the team with 9 RBI.

Sightler has been outstanding with just 2 strikeouts in 36 AB and 14 hits. he's also walked 5 times and been hit by 2 pitches. he needs to hit behind Clarke for the foreseeable future.

the pitching is a whole other ball of wax, but if Carolina could consistently put up some runs the staff won't have to be perfect every pitch.

anyways - lots of words to say USC blew it in key moments this weekend and there are glaring issues the lack of competition hid prior to the Texas series.
