Obviously there is no problem (edit I guess I should say ‘no penalty’) opting out of a game that will not affect your teams chances to win a natty or really your draft stock. But having 9 starters not playing, would we even be in the peach bowl? Cincinnati likely has no one not playing, how do their fans reconcile that sort of thing?

I’ve seen on message boards that “it’s the ole Texas excuse by UGA”. Where if we win, it because they don’t belong around an SEC team, and if we lose it’s because we didn’t want to be there and all of our starters are gone.

While that is an annoying excuse, and trust me I want to win this game, how is it not also extremely legitimate?

Our 2nd and 3rd stringers would all start for Cincy. No excuses not to beat them by 14 especially since our offense is intact

We need to stop calling it “opt out”. I sure as hell don’t call it that. I call it quitting because that is what they are doing. They are quitting on their team and teammates.

at this point, it's inevitable that players will be getting paid in the near future(on the books). There's nothing stopping these guys from quitting on their team.

Not so obvious if you listen to guys like Pollack and Matt Stinchcomb. Both first rd picks who played in "insignificant" bowls their senior years...Pollack called em quiters as did Stinchcomb.

I wouldn't go that far but guys like. Mark Webb? Tre McKitty? DJ Daniels? Ridiculous

As far as the "Texas" excuse,we lost because of our approach and attitude from our upperclassmen that year IMO. I believe we had close to the same amount of guys missing last year vs Baylor (more opt outs for sure)but were far more focused and ready to play.

Any player quitting the team to prepare for the draft should be dropped from the team, have their scholarship pulled, and not be taken to the bowl. Injuries or illness are different than selfishness.

Once bowls have become meaningless, let next year's guys get the reps and playing time.

Makes for more interesting bowls, but the talent gap is too big for that to be an excuse.

A loss in this type of game is due to lack of preparation and motivation (in other words coaching) .

You don't risk millions for a meaningless game when your aren't getting paid to play.

Everyone on the team understands that and so do coaches.

Time for the team to suit up and play. No bitching allowed.

The key is to not care what other fan bases think or say. Why would you care?

The playoffs need to be expanded and done ASAP. These bowls have totally become meaningless, even more so this year, it is essentially a home game for UGA.

Bowls have become meaningless once the playoff formats started. There is zero incentive to play in bowl games if you are declaring, so you might as well expand the playoffs like the vast majority of us wants.

But of the first 64 players picked last year in the NFL draft there were only six that didn’t play in their bowl games, if they had a bowl game. So there were only six that didn’t play. So it’s not necessarily the modern thing or the trend to do that. I think people make it out to be that way, but that’s not actually true.

Pretty solid coach

I’m old enough that I have no idea what this generation of kids think. Maybe it’s cool to be able to say, “hey man, I opted out to prepare for my pro day.” Who knows.

I did not play ball beyond high school. I wasn’t big enough to take the hits. I did, however, run sponsored/major club level until I was in my late 40’s. I ran because I loved the competition. Even when I couldn’t outright win races, I ran. Was it discouraging to line up next to Kenyans or guys who had smoked me for years? Sure, but I was still there to compete. I don’t get quitting on your teammates. I think it’s a shitty, selfish thing to do.

What has always amused me is the number of 'first round draft pick' guys there seem to be. You hear that term all the time when in reality there are only 32.

I don't pay much attention to the draft; I just know that any guy drafted by the Falcons will do better somewhere else. The luckiest day of Brett Favre's life was when he was traded to Green Bay. I don't remember what Atlanta got for him, probably someone that was out of the league in two years.

Ben Cleveland quits, err, I mean, *opts out*

Waiting until game week is chickenshit. Unless you told the coaches beforehand.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. I'm excited to see a preview of the 2021 team.
