Here’s my take
There were far less teams thinking they were top 2 material to feel “cheated”/upset at their spot.
Previously sure there were years where teams #3 and #4 that would feel cheated out of a chance to play in Champ game..but other teams (in this case, Cincinnati/Coastal) would know they wouldn’t be top two, but just wanted to showcase their teams against a big opponent in a big bowl. And it was exciting to watch for everyone.
Now, there is a much larger group of teams who feel like they should be #4 (since there are usually decent flaws and losses on the #4 team to make the argument). So instead of excitement for teams #5-#10 on a great season and great bowl, all of them can feel resentment of being left out and the bowl is useless
Instead of one dud team a year (the “cheated” #3 team), we have a whole huge bunch of teams who think they should have a shot at the playoffs
college football seemed to be a lot more fun pre playoffs. Seasons weren’t defined strictly by the playoffs. Going to the sugar bowl was exciting. Going to the orange bowl was exciting. Teams had great seasons and fans traveled to watch.
Now it’s “didn’t make the playoffs, wasted season” from the players and fans. It’s ridiculous.
This also then cycles itself into recruiting, players want to go to the playoff schools

My memory isn't what it used to be, but I honestly can't think of a single season during the BCS era where the #3 team was truly "cheated." Auburn in 2004 had somewhat of a legitimate gripe, but some of that is hindsight given what USC did to Oklahoma in the championship game.
And I don't even remember who was #3 in 2011 when LSU and Bama played in the BCS Championship Game. And I don't think there's any question that those 2 would have made the championship game in a 4-team playoff system. They were head and shoulders better than every team in college football that season.

To your point, the 3 and 4 seeds are a combined 4-8 in CFP semifinals.
In the 8 losses, they've been beaten by 39, 20, 38, 17, 31, 27, 11, and 35 points
