re: Is the Playoff ruining CFB or is it a symptom of a bigger problem?

It's a symptom of a bigger problem. The playoff was formed because of frustration with the BCS system and the computer formulas that generated the top 2 teams. And that system was created out of a flawed bowl system that was handcuffed because of conference tie-ins. Instead of just blowing up the whole bowl system, they created these workarounds. The reason they did that was because of how much money is involved in these bowl games, and how much influence the bowl committees have. Once the TV money entered the picture with ESPN holding rights to nearly every game, it just go worse.
Read Death To the BCS, which exposes a lot of the corruption involved both in the BCS and the bowl game system. And let's face it, the playoff is basically the BCS without the computer models and an added game. It's the BCS-Plus One many pundits proposed during the BCS era.

I’m not a fan of paying players outright as if they were school employees. I don’t mind them earning some type of income from their likeness though.
Throw in some financial incentive for participation/winning a bowl game and see how many players opt out. Almost like a Pro Bowl bonus in the NFL, for example.

Just a cycle we are in. They never last. Yankees were “ruining” baseball 15-20 years ago.

Right now it's really a joke in CFB. Anybody who doesn't think there's bias to protect the flow of $ to certain programs is an idiot.
The difference in today's environment is the awareness of what's really going on... and it's put viewer loyalty on a slow, but steady decline.

CFB is a mess. UNC is playing in one of its biggest bowl games in forever and 3 of their best players have opted out.
I still can't believe that, it's wild.
In its current state, the sport is a joke. It sucks to say that. I used to never watch the NFL, but it is a much better product right now than CFB. And it pains me to say that, truly does. The young QBs and play makers have the league in a great spot.

Truth is every P5 conference winner should be in. Non-P5 should have 1 or 2 spots reserved.
This still wont stop the best team of the year + Clemson/Alabama from steam rolling. It will still be Clemson vs Alabama. I agree it should move to a format like this, with the two "best" non-conference winner, but truly, they're in a different league right now.

College football is in for some big time changes
NIL coming into play
Will the ncaa even run college football or do power 5 break away and form their own structure
I could easily see lower scholarship limits to create parity like they did in baseball plus it lowers costs to universities in funding those scholarships
Pandemic financial fallout will have an impact as well

I think you're right.
One of the reasons they added the BCS was because the perception was that the ACC was weak, and Florida State was running roughshod/undefeated through the conference every season.
Now Clemson has just replaced Florida State, and the same concerns remain.
It's not the system, it's that a handful of these teams keep repeating their success in-conference without a unified scheduling process across the board.

The ACC has been killing CFB for decades is what is sounds like

When you don't hold programs accountable to flagrant disregard of the recruiting rules then what the frick do you expect.
Oh that's right I forgot... you expect the dim-witted fan to still believe there's a level playing field.

No team has benefitted more from the current format than Clemson, but I tend to agree. Who would have thought that expansion (a play-off with more teams directly competing for the championship) would have resulted in contraction (fewer teams consistently in position to compete)? Does further expansion to an eight team playoff help? It may increase the pool of participants to some degree, but it will be the same 10-12 teams rather than the same 6-8.
I really hate that the non-playoff bowls are becoming an afterthought.

The premise sounds nice, but it won’t work in reality. Recruiting services which are already subjective will adjust accordingly and nothing will change.

I think it just gives more teams an opportunity to compete, with the end result of Alabama and Clemson steam rolling them. Doesn't really solve anything since there is still a lack of parity.

Without the playoff, it would still be Bama vs Clemson most years with possible appearances by Ohio St., Oklahoma, Norte Dame or some other SEC team.
I don’t understand all this crying about having 4 teams instead of 2 with a chance to win the title.

Pretending 130 teams are equal is ludicrous.
Make 3 divisions based on revenue.
Have an 8 team playoff for all 3 leagues.

Because people had the unrealistic expectation that the playoff was created to achieve more parity in college football. It was created to give the illusion of a playoff while protecting the money interests involved in the bowl system.

Here’s my take
There were far less teams thinking they were top 2 material to feel “cheated”/upset at their spot.
Previously sure there were years where teams #3 and #4 that would feel cheated out of a chance to play in Champ game..but other teams (in this case, Cincinnati/Coastal) would know they wouldn’t be top two, but just wanted to showcase their teams against a big opponent in a big bowl. And it was exciting to watch for everyone.
Now, there is a much larger group of teams who feel like they should be #4 (since there are usually decent flaws and losses on the #4 team to make the argument). So instead of excitement for teams #5-#10 on a great season and great bowl, all of them can feel resentment of being left out and the bowl is useless
Instead of one dud team a year (the “cheated” #3 team), we have a whole huge bunch of teams who think they should have a shot at the playoffs
college football seemed to be a lot more fun pre playoffs. Seasons weren’t defined strictly by the playoffs. Going to the sugar bowl was exciting. Going to the orange bowl was exciting. Teams had great seasons and fans traveled to watch.
Now it’s “didn’t make the playoffs, wasted season” from the players and fans. It’s ridiculous.
This also then cycles itself into recruiting, players want to go to the playoff schools

God yes
This isn't a playoff problem whatsoever.
Its an ad revenue sales problem. Having two SEC teams in would have cost them money. They NEED that rust belt fan group engaged.
Its ALL about the money.

My memory isn't what it used to be, but I honestly can't think of a single season during the BCS era where the #3 team was truly "cheated." Auburn in 2004 had somewhat of a legitimate gripe, but some of that is hindsight given what USC did to Oklahoma in the championship game.
And I don't even remember who was #3 in 2011 when LSU and Bama played in the BCS Championship Game. And I don't think there's any question that those 2 would have made the championship game in a 4-team playoff system. They were head and shoulders better than every team in college football that season.
