Sport or not, if it doesn’t really involve much skill, it just ain’t gonna be a crowd pleaser. Which is why golf, NASCAR, and even bowling, despite involving little athleticism, will always have a fan base a billion times larger. Okay maybe not bowling. But it’s still markedly larger than cross country. It actually merits tv coverage. When’s the last time you found yourself flipping through the dial and settling on a good jog? It’s obviously an athletic event but it’s disingenuous to act like anyone truly gives a shite. As a rule, people like to watch other people with great skill. Not simply great athleticism. Combine both and you have a massive following. Do something well that people don’t like doing in the first place? Not so much.

*cue the “breathing techniques, how you hold your thumbs and not slipping in the mud are skills” apologists*
