The continuous running clock mandated in 2008 allowed offenses to go to their HUNH principles. At that point defenses couldn't get off the field, nor mix and match according to down and distance. The RPOs are a simple concept that demands speed to be effective.
Just couldn't happen without the continuous running 40-second clock.
As far as the rest of this thread, please. We are halfway through a 10 game SEC schedule that has let us cannibalize each other. The only thing in "decline" is about 80% of the SEC team's chances of getting to Atlanta.

RPOs aren't the problem. Not enforcing illegal man downfield is the problem. Defenses used to be able to watch offensive linemen to determine if the offense was running or passing. The refs stopped calling illegal man downfield, and those defensive keys went away. Offensive linemen should not be allowed to run block 5 yards downfield on pass plays.

The numbers. We are not even talking about this year with the covid restrictions. 24 year low number. The difference in population is roughly 80 MILLION more people and doubling the amount of college students each year.
If you don't see an issue......
