Saban: Good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore, UGA has an elite D and we scored 41

quote:

"It used to be that good defense beats good offense. Good defense doesn't beat good offense anymore," Saban told ESPN on Friday. "It's just like last week. Georgia has as good a defense as we do an offense, and we scored 41 points on them [in a 41-24 Alabama win]. That's not the way it used to be. It used to be if you had a good defense, other people weren't going to score. You were always going to be in the game.

"I'm telling you. It ain't that way anymore."

And how's that sit with Saban, one of the foremost defensive minds in the game and the architect of some of the more dominant defenses in college football over the last two decades?

"I don't like it," he said with a wry smile. "But we just have to make sure we have an offense that's that way and that explosive, which we have."

"It's hard to coach defense now, because there are so many run-pass concepts in what everybody does," Saban said. "I mean, it's really, really hard to coach the secondary ... because you get so many mismatches back there."

"We're not very good on defense, average at best, but I think we will get better," said Saban, adding that to be elite on defense requires being especially good in the secondary.

"We're going to get there, but this group [in the secondary] doesn't have enough experience. You've got to go through growing pains with these guys because they see so much stuff now in college football. We see something different every week."

Well duh.

You need to have a good defense to get some timely stops, but in today’s game, you need an elite offense.

He’s dead on the money. It’s pretty impressive that as a defensive minded coach, he’s been able to understand the changes to rules and schemes and adjust his offensive philosophy to remain competitive with the best in the country.

It’s also frustrating and strange to watch formerly elite defensive teams like Bama and LSU win at a high level with top notch offenses and swiss cheese defenses.

Saban is spot on.

Historically a great defense has normally shut down great offenses.

These days great offenses chew up great defenses all the time.

Without rule changes I sadly never see the situation changing back to the defenses favor.

Good offense and refs. Bama will get spanked by Clemson or OSU again when they have to deal with a more neutral officiating crew

It's crazy that Saban as the most senior coach is the most innovative, progressive and the least old-school.

Thinking like that is why he's the best college coach of all time. Always willing to adapt because winning is more important than anything else.

This may be true in college, but it’s not always so in professional leagues like the NFL.

Historically great offenses have had trouble winning Super Bowls.

Yes, I realize the KC Chiefs won last year.

So this is his excuse for keeping the failure Golding around. Duly noted.

He’s right, but it’s misleading. Offenses like Bama 2020 and LSU 2019 are so many standard deviations outside the norm that they have to be regarded as unique exceptions and not the rule.

Within anything resembling normalcy, great defense can still stop great offense.

That’s pretty eye opening coming from Saban. As someone who played and coached defense it kinda saddens me to see this new football. I miss games like “9-6”, defense dominated games.

I still think that an elite defense, defensive line and secondary will always have an upper hand. That’s contingent on having an offense that can average 35 a game.. do you see that a lot? No, shut down corners are so hard to come by apparently...

If there is an underrated element to Saban - it’s this right here. He dominated CFB with defense for years. But he was humble enough and had the vision to realize that the landscape was changing and his offense had to change - and this revelation was made before he ever even struggled.

That’s impressive to me. How many coaches, athletes, etc. who have been highly successful do a complete 180 on their philosophy that has gotten them so much success, before it stops working? Hardly any. But Saban did and as a result, the transition between these little “eras” of CFB has been seamless for Alabama.

He’s the GOAT CFB coach and it’s not really close.

The most interesting thing I learned in that article is that Devonta Smith is one of the best corners on our team. I hope we start giving him a few snaps.

More to do with our offense than anything Bama did...

The shift he made that started when he brought in Lane has been one of the most impressive things he’s done in his career. He basically changed his goals in building a team on the fly without a substantial drop off in order to adapt to a changing game. And after making those changes has his team positioned as one of the best in the country. And he did it in his late 60s. A lot of coaches, including a lot who are a lot younger than him, have not been able to pull this off.
