Overall record of 157-40.

Fourth best winning percentage in the country (behind FSU, Miami and Nebraska).

No losing seasons

"Only" three SEC titles and one NC.

I think they should've fired Phatty in 2005 when it was still a top tier job. By 2009 it was an uphill climb to reach Bama, Florida, etc.

Can we make the VOLS great again?

They need a down UGA in the worst way, which is why Fulmer is trying to take up down behind the scenes. UGA firing Richt wasnt good news for the Vols.

Bill King used to have an awesome afternoon call-in radio show in Nashville. I've never heard him so angry as the day in January of 2007 when Alabama hired Saban. Said Alabama had just pushed all their chips into the middle of the table and went on a three-hour rant against the UT administration for not doing what had to be done. No one could have foreseen 14 years, but King knew that it was all over in Knoxville and especially against Alabama.

VOLS need Bert

Not to turn them around, but because he would look like the Syracuse mascot walking the sidelines

1999 was the last time they made a BCS bowl so it was most definitely not a top tier job in 2005.

The Vols are suffering for mostly the same reasons Nebraska is suffering. The lack of great in state recruiting and being surrounded by a bunch of teams with great instate recruiting. They require an ace national recruiter with a competent staff. But even then it is unlikely they have a decade of great success even under those circumstances. It would probably require Georgia, Florida, and Alabama being down all at the same time. Really 1998 was a magical year where they had Alabama and Georgia both down and Florida in a huge rebuilding process.

They probably blew their best chances at a really successful season (Sugar Bowl/SECCG) in 2015 and 2016.

This was during Bama's dark age, primarily because of loss of scholarships.

Nevertheless:

Overall on-field record 131-65-1

17th best winning 1A winning %, .00007 behind OU.

3 losing seasons

3 SEC titles and one NC. Even had seven 10 win seasons.

Even Bama's "dark night"/"time in the abyss" is equal to UT in championships. Who else could win an SEC title with Curry or DuBose as HC?

They sealed their fate when they let social media make their coaching decisions. Let them live with the consequences.
