You do realize that for most of their history all those states were Deep Blue. That is when all the damage was done, and we are just now starting to fix it.

The democrats used to be a coalition of conservatives and liberals. The conservatives formed the party's backbone in the south for nearly a century. When the dems shifted to the left, first with FDR and Truman economically, then on Civil Rights, the "solid south" fell apart. The CRA of 1964 was pretty much the final straw.

These states have always been conservative. Only thing that changed was the label.
