I'd like to hear the reasoning behind these decisions. I need a good laugh.

This is just preparing us for football to not happen.

Florida and South Carolina have to host Missouri, but can't play their in state rivalries from other conferences because the CFB world has gone full retard.

In the same way that the TSA does anything to keep our airplanes safer, it doesn't.

It's just a half-measure to give a false sense of security and acquiesce some dumb people, just like the TSA.

Fewer games obviously limits opportunities for exposure.

My state just passed today that high school sports have to wear a mask, at all workouts, and no contact. I told my son it will be canceled before long. Hey kids wear a mask in 100 degree workouts, make sure no contact though...Ludacris!

It doesn't but it does give the SEC control of the entire schedule. The SEC would not be dependent upon other conferences that could screw up the season and TV money.

I don’t like it - but I get it. Worrying about 14 teams is easier than 100 teams.

If each team plays 4 OOC games, you have 56 extra teams to worry about. And then consider the teams those teams just played - becomes much more complicated to track.

Because conf games only allows flexibility
You are most likely going to have to cancel or postpone SEC games if a team has several positive tests
So let's say Fla Tenn can't be played in Sept due to positive tests on one team than you could have schedule flexibility to move it to a later date for the weekends that will be set aside if you have to do that.
With an eight or ten game schedule that will free up weekends to shift the schedule as it will be a moving target for everyone
Now if the cancellations start to pile up than at that point you pull the plug on the season

Hopefully the schools in that conference are all in conformity with the same rules and procedures.

All I can come up with.

Doesn’t help the spread but maybe can get some games in.

I would wager that the main point behind this decision is that there is not uniformity in non-conference schedules, therefore there may be teams that have non-conference opponents that aren't allowed to play at all. So, the only way to make the season as fair as possible is to eliminate the non-conference games and just have everyone play teams in the conference.

It makes logistics and rescheduling easier knowing that shite is not going to go smoothly. It’s contingency planning.

I hate to say it but this does make sense to me as a measure to try to hold on to a season. Eliminating the non conference games means vastly reducing the the number second hand contacts that the players will have to risk. Also it means the teams are being exposed to the safety standards of only the one conference. They will not need to trust other conferences are acting with the same level of concern.

Of course I assume they will skip out on the opportunity to have a 12 game conference schedule. Apart from the 5-10 big team non conference games in a given year, a 12 game conference schedule would be amazing to watch.

I'm guessing this is just a way for the bigger programs to avoid having to pay SE Bumfrick St a million bucks to come and get their arse kicked (or, in Tennessee'scase, administer an arse kicking) in front of an empty stadium.

The CDC just came out and reported it appears COVID cannot be spread within conference, but non-conference it will cause apocalyptic type results.

I guess one theory is that if one conference/region flares up and has to shut down, it won’t force everything to shut down.

Not sure about reasoning, but if this does happen and the Power 5 only play conference games this season, this could be the beginning of a permanent split between the Power 5 and the remaining conferences.

Personally, I think that would be a good thing for college football going forward.

The idea I believe is two fold.

1) Stadiums are not going to be at 100% if any footbal is played so playing little sisters of the poor $1M to come get beat isn't cost effective anymore.

2) A conference can set their rules and protocols on safety and enforce it on all their member schools. Even if other conferencs have protocls that are similar they won't be identical and so a conferrence can effect a consistent set of safety rules for all games that season. Also an all conference schedules gives more flexibilty to move games during a season if needed.
