How about we just take down the statues honoring traitors to our country who formed a government whose sole purpose was to keep slaves? Then we can have a discussion about other people.

Well to be historically accurate, it wasn’t clear at the time that states couldn’t secede. It had never been decided as a matter of law. There were many at the time who legitimately believed states were legally entitled to secede. There were no treason trials in large part because it wasn’t clear that those who fought for the Confederacy could be convicted of treason.
