BUT BUT BUT ive been told incessantly that he inherited a shitty team from Richt!!! How can that be???

There was no senior class in 2016 for uga.
The only good seniors were transfers.
It was a failure of recruiting in 2013 by Richt and a failure to bring in juco or transfers to make up for the misses.

In 2019, we didn't have much of a senior class (class of 2016 Nauta, Hardman, Ridley all going pro early from Smart's first attempt to save a recruiting class with 2 months after Richt was fired). A big difference was that Smart brought in transfers for QB, TE, and WR to make up for the losses from the 2016 class.

I don't know why people on this board cant comprehend a difference between talent on the roster and upper-class talent on the roster. Joe Burrow was a different QB when he was 18, 19, and 20 years old.
Edit to add LSUs 2016 class won a national championship as seniors. Not surprising, that class was ranked #2 in the country. A great class made a great year when they were older.

Only 4 members of that class were starters in 2019 and Divinity was out most of the year.
