He had a state retirement so he just had to put the years in. Hurricane Katrina ended up really helping him out in the long run.

I mean I get that he could retire....what i meant was being in a financial position to actually do it at that age is rare. He must have done great investing his money. I am guessing the Katrina thing meant he got a lot of OT and was able to turn it over into investments.

That's what I did basically. I was working 12 hours a day M-F and 8 hours on Saturdays. Then, every time we got a raise I just rolled it all into my 401K.

A lot of people take their OT money and just sped it or buy a new car or something. Your dad must have been very disciplined. You should be very proud of him.
