Georgia football is cursed as far as getting the championship monkey off its back. But, Smart did get UGA to the NC game and merely just missed out on winning it all. Smart also had UGA #1 for a couple weeks during their CFPNCG season.
The closest Richt came to a NC was a 13-1 #3 finish in 2003 and a 2007 AP #2 11-2 finish. I guess because of a strong 2007 finish, they were preseason #1 in 2008 but that only lasted a couple weeks.
Smart may not get close to a title opportunity again while LSU and Alabama are running things.
