VT - 7-6 with wins over two ranked opponents.
Ole Miss - 5-6 with one win over ranked opponent.
Hmmm.
The records aren't comparable given the different eras and conference strengths.
1977 ole miss only played 11 games in the regular season. It lost 4 of those games by one score.
2014 VT played 12 regular season games in a schit ACC. They had the same 5-6 record as '77 Ole Miss after 11 games. Vt also lost 4 of those first 11 games by 1 score. But, their schedule was not on par with that of Ole Miss 77, nor their competitiveness.
They essentially were both 5-6 teams. Yet, VT grabbed an FCS win and snuck past some traditional FBS bottom dwellers (scoring no points in regulation vs WF, with only 3 points in the 2OT loss) to get a better overall record with the benefit of more games in a different era.
Hmmmm....

Oh, and the only reason Ole Miss beat the eventual champs that year was that Notre Dame had not yet turned to its new starting quarterback - Joe Montana.
Hmmm.
Hmmm.
