Sure you can. Lots of teams blow games that they shouldn’t early in the season. A few years ago Virginia Tech lost to an FCS team and played in a New Years bowl game.

Mike Leach has a couple losses to FCS teams, and still got to 9 wins.

There’s tons of other examples

It certainly puts a stain on whatever we may accomplish, but after a few days to cool down...you are correct.

How poorly the defense played doesn’t inspire much hope though

Future success is determined by talent and developing that talent.

Leach is a good coach but has taken advantage of a conference that has taken a nose dive, just look at Pac 12 teams on the line of scrimmage. Virginia Tech still had a full 6 months for recruiting after that loss, we only realistically have 2 months to retain and attract talent.

8 wins with losses to Georgia, Florida, USC, and Kentucky does not help achieve the future championship aspirations Barry Odom has set as a precedent.
