Why would he agree to anything less then what he is owed per his contract?

His buyout is $8 million right now but it drops to $6 million on 4/15.

Most likely the discussion has been what number between those two will get him gone now. It's one of those few times where each side has legitimate motivation to negotiate. Bama wants to move on today and Avery knows he has a very narrow window to get more than $6 mil.

Could also be timing of payments. The buyout is to be paid over 4 years. Alabama could wait until 4/16 and buyout drops to $6M paid at $1.5 per year. But they don’t want to have a lame duck coach for another month when the search could already be started. Avery could say I’ll take the $6M today but I want lump sum.
