I would say only having one NCAA Tournament appearance in 4 years (despite recruiting well) and then losing in the first round of the NIT the other three years probably has something to do with it.

Well, if there were any doubt that the right decision was made (there isn't), this should seal it. When the rival fans think you "made a huge mistake", you definitely made the right call.
