A discovery of quintessence would revolutionize fundamental physics and cosmology, including rewriting the cosmos’s history and future. Instead of tearing apart in a Big Rip, a quintessent universe would gradually decelerate, and in most models, would eventually stop expanding and contract in either a Big Crunch or Big Bounce.

I like this conjecture. It seems reasonable to think that the spacetime field, which generates gravity, would exert a constant effect upon dark energy. And if dark energy is weakened by the expansion of spacetime, gravity would once again dominate it as it did in the epochs just after the Big Bang.

The contraction of "The Big Bounce" might sting. :)

The idea of expansion and contraction that could cycle forever is enthralling to me.
